Xena -- part 2

well, the farrier just left...that front "bad" foot is a mess...1st off, we had to sedate her because she's in so much pain to stand on just 1 front foot...when we picked up the first foot (the bad one), we found out real fast why she was in pain...the toe on that foot is dead (but fixable)...there was so much infection in there from the hoof wall being rolled up from the rest of the foot...second, the stink was coming from 2 holes that were full of infection...1 of the holes had like a growth over it and as soon as the farrier knifed it off, it bled like a stuck pig...AND STINK!...so we put that one down and trimmed the other front foot (he took off 3 inches off the toe on that one) and went back to the original foot...the bleeding had slowed right down and the stink was gone...so we did the back feet (which surprisingly weren't that bad) on the 1 back foot she has a fever ring, which the farrier figures is about 6 months old...hmmmm?...sounds like right about the time she foaled this spring and lost the baby and had to fight for her life for 3 days...and the vet down there wasn't allowed to do anything medical to help her!...but he did save her life...brought her water and food...If it wasn't for him, she probably would've died...and G thinks this is "good animal care"?????...she was complaining to me about how she wanted to charge a vet for not coming out because she had a HUGE vet bill and had a mare that was having trouble foaling...she lost her and the baby and she called that vet a murderer...is she not on the same boat?????...anyways, we wrapped the foot and are going to keep it wrapped for a few days...he took off as much heel as he could this time...says he figures it'll be at least 6 months...we have to wait for the foot to grow...can't believe this mare didn't die of blood poisoning...I have NEVER smelled anything like this in almost 30 years of owning horses...BUT, her name IS Xena...she IS a fighter...she did walk alittle better back to her stall...can you imagine walking on a blister for 7 years?...no wonder the poor thing didn't want to walk!...stay tuned for updates!
November 9, 2009 07:49PM
Aww, the poor honey! Xena is a GREAT name for her!
November 9, 2009 10:14PM
Oh, I'm soooooooooooo glad that you've got her. Jumped up Jeez, what kind of cretin could allow a horse to look like that. Couldn't someone go down there and pummel her????????????
I hope those other horses find someone like you, they need someone, if Xena is any indication at all.
I'm going to have a good cry now.
Oh her poor feet
You are GOOD PEOPLE qhcuttinggirl.
Would a note to the folks down there(Sherrif, the Speaking up for Horses gang. and etcetera) help to bolster their spirits? I'd write them a love letter if it would help.

oh, my heart hurts for her! and for you! She is a fighter, many horses would not have survived this. I am so glad you have her and can help her recover! Is she showing any signs of knowing you, remembering you or pasture mates?
Keep us posted. Those pictures of her feet. I feel so bad for the other horses who are receiving the same "standard of care".
November 10, 2009 08:11AM
I can finally post on this thread again. I just wanted to say how happy I am for you that Xena is home, and that I hope that she will be ok now. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make Xena more comfortable, and of course, feel much loved.
November 10, 2009 01:18PM
sheesh! I went back to the old thread and realized I had been missing 10 posts!!! I am so glad you got the situation resolved!!!
Let's hope someone does keep an eye on G's "Farm of Horrors" this winter.
I hope Xena's feet improve with no set back! She must be quite happy to have her meals served on time every day! Have you confirmed her to be in foal?
lol I wondered about the picture of the hoo-hoo ... thanks for the explanation.
November 10, 2009 03:36PM
FI...lmao...see...I just KNEW there'd be at least 1 other sick minded person out there like me...and THAT'S why I explained that particular picture...lol...yes, unfortunately she's confirmed in foal...figure she'll foal May/June...goody...I doubt G will give me the breeder's certificate for it, so I'll probably sell it to just a good home...it'll be decently bred if anyone wants just a good horse...guess we have to see if it lives first or not...I think she does remember me...I've had to yell at her for chewing on the barn, and I'm damned near positive she'd remember me yelling at her...lol...as for pasturemates, she's just stalled next to one...I don't have her out with anyone because I don't want her to be chased or whatever...cutting horse mares have a BIG reputation for being territorial and can be big bullies when a new horse enters the herd...knock on wood, I've never had more then some chasing and some nipping, but with Xena's feet, I didn't want to risk it...she's out in a grassy/sandy paddock by herself with run of roost and lots of extra hay and water...I honestly think her having water was a huge issue down at "that woman's" place (I've started calling her "that woman" because I'm so pissed and she doesn't deserve to have a name)...see, Xena stayed up on this hill and the "watering hole" was down at the barn...and with Xena's feet, I doubt she could make it down there...
Sixhorses, I would LOVE to go down there and pummel her...but I don't have my passport yet...I fully plan on writing the sheriff, the vet who looked after the horses & the girls at SU...they've helped me sooo much..if you'd like to read more about SU...here's the link... [ speakupforhorses.org] ...and here's the link to where the vet, Dr. Michael O'Bryan (who looked after the horses and probably saved Xena's life) works full time... [ www.broadbentwildlife.org] ...now I know donations are welcomed from both groups...but when I click on the gift shop for broadbent, nothing comes up...I actually bought all my sisters xmas presents from a site called animalrescuesite.com and every dollar helps feed animals...I just thought that if someone wanted to give, they could buy something for xmas...kinda like killing 2 birds with 1 stone...
Also, on sort of the same note, my website designer (who is awesome and is also a horse person) is offering anyone who I direct to her who wants flyers, business cards, logo's, etc done, and they mention it's "For Xena", she's donating all the funds to Xena's rehab...SUPER nice of her...AND, she owns the newspaper down in the Chatam-Kent area and is featuring a story on Xena's journey!!!...she's coming out next week...I feel like Xena's a superstar!...these are all just idea's for anyone who is interested...you can check out my website designer's, Myriam, webpage at [ www.grandstandweb.ca] just in case anyone was interested in helping or even if they're looking for a website designed...you can also have a peek at my webpage www.doubletph.com to look at her work...
Thank you so much everyone for all the kind words and helping Xena and I through this very rocky journey...I will take a pic of her feet this weekend (the one foot needs to stay wrapped until at least Friday)...they look MUCH better...alittle sore still because we are changing angles slowly...but it's a start!
November 14, 2009 03:44PM
Any more updates? Is she still very sore on her footsies or is she getting better?
I hope she is enjoying the sunshine ... my girl and her friends refused to come in last night! Silly girls!
November 14, 2009 06:30PM
Hi there!
Will you take a few pictures of her feet now that they are trimmed up?? Anything to get that awful(old) vision out of my head. Ahhhhh she must be Soooooooooooooooooooooooo happy to be home.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww,
She looks better already, and tho' her feet are scary, they too are so much better.
Thanks for the pics, they ease me a wee bit.
I went on the wildlife rehab website. Love the memorial jewelry, I don't understand the bidding process, but will go back and try and figure it out.
I also wrote a note of thanks to Dr. O' Bryan.

November 14, 2009 09:42PM
She does look so much better... kudos to you for hanging in there and waiting for a good outcome.... she looks so much better already.
November 14, 2009 10:02PM
She does look better already - I bet she feels so much better just getting the infection out of her feet. HUGE kudos to you, qhcuttingirl!!! Xena is a very lucky girl.
November 15, 2009 01:47PM
thank you very much everyone...
yes the 1 foot is still really scary...where the toe is curled up, that's all dead foot...we have to wait for it to grow out...but it will happen...she's still alittle sore considering all the absess' and dead toe...but last night, she damned near ran me over coming into the barn for supper!...so a good sign!
Sixhorses, thank you for writing to Dr. Mike...I've got 3 different address' here that I have to get xmas cards for and write them and thank them myself...you're doing better then me then on his website, because when I click on the "gift shop", NOTHING comes up...hmmm...weird
I thank everyone for their thoughts and thanx and kudo's...my bf just got back yesterday from hunting...he left on the 6 (so 3 days after she arrived) and he said he saw a HUGE difference...not just in her body weight, but also how more content she looks (ex. not standing there rocking back with ears back in pain)...she stand more stretched out, puts weight on that foot, and surprisingly, that hump in her back just before her hips is getting smaller!...no more having to hunch up to walk will probably do that huh?...
November 16, 2009 02:07AM
I am so glad to see her looking so much better in the pictures. But ouch, the foot! Let's hope it will grow as fast as it can and in a few months, it will all be history.
Amazing she survived all this. They say "no foot, no horse" and to think she has had to endure this and still come out alive. She must have known you were fighting with her, for her!
November 16, 2009 12:45PM
I sure hope so...I've said since the day she was born that she's "one tough nut"...there's a reason her name is Xena!...long story short, at 5 days old, she was booted by another mare of mine and went flying through the air and landed in this little wee creek we had running through the pasture (it was about 2 feet wide and about an inch deep)...well low and behold out of the whole pasture, Xena landed face first in that little creek...she just got up and kept on trucking...wasn't hurt...needless to say, the mare who booted her (was also pregnant and due in a couple days) was taken out of the mix and when she foaled (exactly a week after Xena was born) they were put out together again and everything was fine...that year, I had a red dun filly and a buckskin filly...Xena and Lena...nice huh?
November 16, 2009 07:59PM
Hi Lori,
I guess I have to come here for updates on Xena now, LOL.
First off, Glenda has another court date tomorrow, with her new lawyer. (Is there a rolling eyes icon?)
We spoke to Dr. Mike and he is extremely infuriated ( I am using a proper word instead of the way he really feels). We assume that G. is trying to drag this out and perhaps even invisions being able to have the first trial thrown out. Since she is going to appear infront of the same judge, it is highly unlikely.
We will have to wait for a report from the front.
Dr. Mike is the best, we absolutely love, love, love him.
I would like to share a story that was published in our local paper about Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary earlier this year. It's three pages. But it is one of the most touching stories I have ever read.
Dr. Mike has overcome so much and his story alone (on page three) is an inspiration in itself.
He is the one with the fingers up the horse's nostrils on page one, btw.
Enjoy:

Hi SU...
I did email you back when I got that report from you about G...didn't get it?...well damn it...it was really long too...lol...
Yes, Dr. Mike was nothing but helpful and kind to me...I can imagine what his wording was...probably the same as what I'm saying right now...(there's alot of angry fist shaking going on here)...she's nothing but an asshat and deserves to be thrown back in jail...I hope that judge see's right through her and does just that
November 17, 2009 10:12AM
GREAT article btw SU
November 17, 2009 01:43PM
Did she really sell the farm? or was that another ploy? If she did, who bought it? and do they need the horses out? Where is she supposed to be going? I worry about the horses left there. Whether they stay with her or are seized, somehow their fate is a big ?
November 17, 2009 03:08PM
from what she told me, the farm sold...not sure if that was her decision or the courts???...not sure who bought it, she just said that the guy who did owns all the land around her farm and he wanted to get his hands on hers...when I was dealing with her for Xena, she said she had 30 days to get rid of/move the horses, but that the guy would probably give her abit longer...she has a court date today and I will let everyone know ASAP when I hear something...perhaps SU will just post it on here as well...yes this is a mess, happy that Xena is home, but still worried for the horses down there...wish I lived closer...or maybe it's a good thing I don't...lol...I myself might be thrown in jail for assault or theft (trying to save the poor horses in the middle of the night)...haven't heard nothing from G since I sent her a nasty email about the way Xena looked when she arrived...PLUS, she said I still owed her another $50, which I pretty much said she can stuff up her a**!...
Will let everyone know as soon as I hear anything

the newspaper is coming out Friday night at 6:30 to do...well I'm not sure if it's a story just on Xena, or if it's just "outting" the problem of animal abuse...but anyways, she's coming out...if it turns out good, I'll send GP the link (because I'm apparently an idiot at trying to give links seeing as they never work for me...) to post here...
November 19, 2009 08:17PM
Lori,
we haven't heard anything yet.
I assume she somehow managed to drag this out once again..
Dr. Mike would call us immediately IF they ever get the horses out, as we have folks on stand-by to take in some of them.
In this case no news is NOT good news.

November 19, 2009 10:30PM
dammit...this is just FREAKIN' ridiculous!...how the hell can that woman get away with this...is it the same judge residing over all her court dates? or someone new everytime?...I've never really been to court (once when I was in like GRADE 4, that was our "outting" for the day...nice huh?...here kids, lets go see some criminals!) and I don't know how it really works for sure...
I'm trying to figure out something here to help at least 1 or 2 horses...could probably fight in a couple weanling fillies here...just to give them a home and some good care at least...and possibly some FOOD and FARRIER work perhaps?!...
Honestly, I'm surprised someone hasn't found her in a dark, deserted alley somewhere or tried to run her down on the road...I know the Sheriff said that people are pretty sick of her and the ones down there that were trying to help her in the beginning are sick of her s**t now...we need more vigilantes in the world!
November 20, 2009 04:53PM
here's alittle good news...funny how the LITTLEST things make you jump up and down and clap your hands...
so since Xena is in a relatively small pasture, I go out and pick up the poop piles once or twice a week...well, I was out there today just doing that...and she WALKED across the paddock to come check out the wheelbarrel!...so there's a sure sign she's feeling much better...she WANTED to walk to get to that wheelbarrel...she is now back to her "goat tactics" (as I always called it, likes VERY much to get into things)...I'm actually surprised she didn't knock over the wheelbarrel...
since she was a baby, she did this thing where she would stretch out her head and neck and turn her head sideways and, it almost looks like, she's chewing the sides of her cheeks...she's not really...she just pretends to chew...well, she's back doing that...which, if I remember right, she did when she was happy...no more ears pinned, she's putting on weight FANTASTICALLY (is that a word?), she's walking around her paddock ALOT more, lays down only ONCE a day outside to give her feet a rest (she was laying down ALOT when she first came here) and I'm pretty sure she loves coming in at night, getting fed, dunking her hay in her water bucket and most nights, getting brushed and fussed over...she's still alittle sore, but she's not "hopping" when she walks now, everyday getting alittle better, she's more just walking slow...but no more hopping!...we have her on BMZ (a biotin supplement) to help grow her feet alittle faster...hopefully, come spring, she won't even remember being sore, and G's was just a bad nightmare..........................
November 21, 2009 12:02AM
This is so good to read. Your posts are sounding happier too!!!
Imagine.... food... as much as she wants... and personal groomer! I bet she had not seen a brush in years! She must feel so much better!

Good article. However, I never believed Xena's lack of care was due to finances, but rather to G's hoarding tendencies. Someone in a difficult financial situation, but no hoarding tendencies, would have been happy to rehome horses/dogs/cats to give them a chance. But someone who keeps stallions and breeds the mares every year, finance or no finance, is a hoarder. Nothing to do really with dollars!!
Hoping her progress continues steadily and that the foal is healthy. At least, he/she will have had good prenatal care!
November 23, 2009 03:10PM
thank you FI...not sure if it started with $$$'s or not...I know she says she spent $10K on her hay guy last year, but then turned around and needed me to send her money for fuel so she could drive an hour away to get the papers stamped by a federal vet < which in the end was a HUGE waste of time anyways...the story contradicts itself all over the place...
December 1, 2009 06:34PM
well...the vet was just out to do another chiro adjustment on Xena...said when he first saw her he'd put her bcs at about a 2.5...he is now VERY impressed with how good she looks...said she has alot more beef on her bones...and put her next chiro appt in about 6 weeks...said she looks AWESOME!...so we're well on our way to recovery!...just thought I'd keep everyone updated...will send pics as soon as there's time (and snow on the ground, man I hate dreary looking backgrounds...would LOVE to have just alittle snow so it at least looks christmas'y)
December 1, 2009 10:46PM
Wow, she is recovering FAST!! That's great, she will be in better shape for the winter!
December 2, 2009 09:06AM
Thanx FI...
yes...and I forgot to mention...Xena is paddocked right beside the barn and on that side of the barn there's 2 window's...so I'm in the barn the other day saddling up 1 of my palomino's, and I can hear everyone running around outside cause it's cool and they're wired...so I look up, and here's Xena "bob" jogging past the windows!...now when I say "bob" jogging, I mean she's still bobbing her head, but she was jogging!...and then this morning, I was putting her out and out of nowhere, she kind of takes off, jogs around me and does the little head toss...hoping since she's wanting to move more that she'll build up those back end muscles again...I know, like I said, my vet seen a HUGE difference in her...such great news for christmas!...
December 2, 2009 11:11PM
She must have heard her friends are safe as well! lol Good for her and for you.
December 3, 2009 02:43PM
thank you FI...I know it's not a major thing, but it is to Xena!...she's come a long way in a month's time (1 month from today)...from standing there hating the world to "bob" loping around her pasture...I even put another mare out with her yesterday to see what would happen...Xena wants nothing to do with other horses just yet...but nothing major...a few threats, but no fights or kicking...the other mare I put in with her is pregnant as well and I figure it'd be nice if those 2 got to know each other so the babies can play together...but spring is a long way off and there's plenty of time for that...for now, Xena can enjoy eating when she wants and laying down without getting harassed!...
I've told her her friends are safe and sound...she has nothing...might be some bad feelings there still about them not letting her eat...or she was jealous because they could get down to the food...who knows...I'm sure she'll tell me her story when she's ready...I think for now, she's getting back to her normal self...and she's out of the major pain (mentally and physically) and just enjoying life again...she just doesn't look depressed...I'm sure just as soon as we get some snow and she can frolick in it, she'll be a WHOLE lot happier!

Yes, she does have a way with words...you should go through some of the blogs...OMG, soooooo funny!
December 11, 2009 02:42AM
yes she has a way with words, but she is far from being my favourite person. I do not read her blog on her regular basis and I have found that sometimes, she blogs but does not check her sources.
December 11, 2009 08:08AM
there was a link in there that sent me back here and that was a little unnerving
December 11, 2009 09:26AM
yes, the part where it said "the rehab of a horse returned to previous owner"?...or something like that...
FI, I don't always agree with everything she says, but when she gets on about stupid people doing stupid things and then they wonder why they get hurt...I can't help it...it's like a car crash, you don't want to look, but you can't help it...
December 11, 2009 11:59PM
Maybe I should be happy because she quoted me!!! lol
Yes, it was kind of strange to get back here by clicking on the link to the great thread regarding the rehabbing by a previous owner! lol
SU also mentioned you in a post on ABR!! [ forums.delphiforums.com]
One thing Fugly did which I think is great is the reunion site where former owners/breeders of horses can post that they will take a horse back. The rest of her blog, well... not crazy about it!
December 12, 2009 08:58AM
well, everyone has their own flavor...like I said, I like some of her stuff, LOVE some of her stuff...but don't agree with some either...
I just wish I had more money to give...actually, I wish I had a huge farm where I could take in rescues and either be a foster home, or for the really bad ones that need extra TLC, a permanent home...
I agree also with the reunion site...that was a great idea...
well, better get running, full day ahead and I noticed yesterday afternoon and this AM that Xena has a cold *sigh*, but I guess she's gotten through worse...off to find my Novo-Trimel...

January 12, 2010 04:43PM
thanx for asking Xine...sorry I've been MIA mostly...now that we have some snow, I've been busy...most of the time up at 3AM to go plowing and by the time I'm done for the day I'm zonked...
Xena is doing wonderful...she is now out with another pregnant mare of mine, Grace, and they seem to be doing okay together...she's still pinning her ears (all threats, no action) whenever Grace comes around...but I actually saw the 2 of them sniffing noses today...and eating side by side...ears still pinned sometimes, but Grace just ignores her...it's weird because Grace is alpha mare and is usually not very tolerant of such things, but she's never pinned her ears once at Xena...wonder if she senses?...anyways, going to try to get some pics, possibly this weekend of Xena for everyone...hopefully the weather will co-operate and I don't have to work!

lol...I don't drive the snow plow often...I have to go finish up my licensing for that...but I do drive a cool little Kubota tractor to do the sidewalks...in all honesty, I'd prefer the tractor anyways, just for the fact that I'm usually done before everyone else and I really don't have the hassles of dealing with vehicles...lol...I've got a little song and everything I sing...lol...how SAD is that?...
yes, it's so warm here today that I took Xena's blanket off so she could "air out"...lol...she's doing GREAT!...going to try to get pics of her this weekend...not that there'll be a HUGE change in her, but it's just nice to have a diary of her progress

just wanted to let everyone know that the vet was out today for Xena's chiro appt...said she is doing EXCELLENT!...there was alot less to adjust and figures that once the farrier can get that foot better (still abit to grow out) and she's not hobbling around so bad, she should be back to PERFECT!...so good news...the 1st chiro appt, Xena could barely turn her head to the right...today, her nose touched her shoulder!...such good news...just thought I'd keep everyone updated!

Wonderful news. I am so glad to hear that she is recovering so fast. It shows that good food, farrier work, do so much to help. The other 48 (minus the two stallions) seem to be doing well too. So glad to know they are all out of danger.

maybe I just got the right angles!...lol...no mud at my place...I'm on a sand ridge (which has it's blessings and cursing's) but in the spring...I'm HARD PRESSED to have 2 wks of slop...it's usually dried up in days if we have a steady wind with sun
February 11, 2010 05:12PM
She's come a long way and looking great! She definitely looks like a much happier horse now, understandably.
February 11, 2010 05:25PM
thanx guys...was just comparing pics of today and the ones I sent to GP earlier...has she EVER put on muscle between the back legs!...I guess I don't really notice it when I see her everyday...she is starting to look alittle pregnant too huh?...if you could see the belly on Grace (the other mare she's with) you would think Xena doesn't look pregnant at all...Grace's alias is TUBS!!!!
February 14, 2010 11:07AM
just to report...Xena was out bucking, hobble jogging (is that even a phrase?) and rearing out in the pasture this morning...she must be feeling frisky!...foot still looks pukey, and she still gimps around abit...but her eyes don't have the pain in them like when she first came...hopefully that foot will all grow out and she'll be back to her old self...running, bucking, playing..............getting into trouble...just like the old days
February 14, 2010 11:22AM
I LOVE good news!
Congratulations!

She looks beautiful!! and her belly is growing too! She is doing very well and I hope now she knows she is home and starts to show her appreciation!
February 14, 2010 10:04PM
Lori, Xena looks fantastic. Have you sent the pix to Dr. Mike?
He will be so thrilled.
We have had snow here every flippin weekend for the last three weekends and more tonight, tomorrow and again next weekend. I CANNOT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!
And Paulette broke her right foot last Wednesday in the pasture.
Haven't been able to go visit the other horses and take pix since mid January, but they are doing great.
They send their best to Xena.
No babies yet here - Thank God.

Such a relief to see Xena looking soooo much better. Saw the 'before' pics today for the first time - ghastly.
Way to go
February 15, 2010 06:53PM
thank you everyone for the kind words...I'm happy she's making good progress myself...BUT THAT FOOT SEEMS TO BE TAKING FOREVER!!!...I know, I know...patience...
Annie, I heard about Paulette's foot...AND THE WALKER!...lol...I have not sent the pics to Dr. Mike yet, actually it slipped my mind...but will do so...I called the Sheriff about 2 weeks ago now...the girl said he was in court the next 3 days and that he'd get back to me the following week probably........no answer...don't think he'll ever take my calls again...too bad...
glad to hear everyone is doing good...when my vet checked Xena, he figured her to be 3-4 months along...so that puts her at foaling in May/June...she'll be having this year off (obviously) to catch up on body weight and such...get that foal weaned and then she can have all winter/spring to catch up...I've got her on a really good feeding program which seems to be supplementing the babies needs and still put weight on her...so that's good...it's just that darned foot!...it's coming along...but sooooooooooo slowly...I've never been one to be patient...lol
I will get those pics to Dr. Mike and again, I appreciate everyone's *jingles* (never heard of that term until I joined this forum)...it's still soothing to hear everyone's still routing for her
February 15, 2010 08:48PM
WOW QH G, this just took me the better part of the evening to read from the begining and catch up on all the pics and updates, but what a story, and Kudos for you , I knwo that anx feeling when you know there's a horse that is in desparate need of your help, their life is hanging in the balance and you just cant seem to help them fast enough.. she's looking pretty good though, Kazillion Jingles for Xena !!! good for you too for stepping up and trying your best to save her..
February 16, 2010 02:42PM
thanx crazyacres5...it was quite the long process/battle...just wish I could've taken in more...but Xena will NEVER have to worry about anything like that again...she's a lifer here... ...even if she is a 1000 lb GOAT!!!!
February 16, 2010 10:41PM
LOLOLO, pretty good looking Goat if you ask me... We too had a nightmare of a time with a lovely mare I had here for a year or so, and sold her too "Friends" in need of a good trail mare, well it was only about 4 months later and I needed a summer mount for my nephew and knew they werent using her, so borrowed her back for a couple of the summer months, when she came back they said they had left her in with their Canadian Stallion and might in foal, summer went well and we brought her home to them in Oct 08.... this April 09 we got a call from the Human Society, they were on their property and wondered if we could take the mare back, she was in serious trouble, we said " absolutly" well they pulled in here and stepped her off the trailer , and OMG , she was near dead, worst shape of starvation I had seen in years, and get this, she was assessed at 350 lbs. under weight, and she foaled here with us 4 days later !!!!! baby was so weak we had to stand him up to nurse every hour on the hour for the first 31 hours, and once we pulled her up off the floor from foaling , she locked her knee's in fear she'd go down again, it was a battle to keep her alive and her colt Hunter, but both made it and are happy , healthy and living for ever at Crazy Acres Ranch.

You folks are an inspiration to me...
I wish, wish, wish, that I had some of whatever you have. I'd look after a problem critter, I'd do the right thing, but I don't think I could be anywhere near as kind and open as you seem to be. When I hear stories like the one's about Xena and the above story. I become more bitter and disgusted with humans in general. I hate it that my glass is half empty. I'm always shocked at the depravity of people and the heroes don't fill me with the amount of joy that compensates for all A-holes out there.
Can you bottle some of your faith and optimism and send me over a case?
I seriously admire your positve selves.

I wanted to add that I do experience joy, and grateful feelings when I encounter the excellence that can be ours...
I'm not numb to it,
but who would starve an animal? who would steal someone's dogs? or commit acts of cruelty on a being that is basically helpless??
I can't stand the thought of it.
That's all . Sorry my friends, Dragging up my bootstraps, and quitting the whining.

February 17, 2010 09:49AM
hey Sixhorses...I'm not as full of optimism and faith as you think...I'm sorry, along with this, the experiences in my life has led me down a path that has NO faith in the human race...there's stories like this (animal abuse, cruelty, etc) that just make my blood boil...I hate to say it, but I think after Xena, if I was to see someone abusing an animal, I think I'd jump on them and beat the living snot outta them...to me, the human race are nothing but greedy, selfish, self centered, arrogant *things*..........but, then you meet nice people (like the people on here) and it somewhat restores your faith just slightly...I'm the type of person, (not to toot my own horn, which I don't) that can read people pretty good...you know the old saying "trust until they give you a reason NOT to trust"?...well I'm the opposite...I don't trust anyone anymore UNTIL they give me a reason to trust them...I DEFINITELY don't trust non-animal lovers...I'm sorry, but in my book, they're just one step away from becoming a serial killer...don't get me wrong, there are certain people that just rub me the RIGHT way and you just know right off the bat that they're *good people*...by good people I mean they are compassionate, caring and would do the right thing and fight for what's right if need be...and you know, there are people for certain *area's* in this world...what I can do, someone else might not, but they'd play an important role somewhere else down the line...I know there's certain things I could NEVER do...like work at a animal shelter...I could NEVER do that...or I'd be so dehydrated from crying all the time...or in jail for finding the person that hurt the animal...
as for you saying I'm fullof optimism and faith?...for me, there was no other alternative...I'm a very strong person (what with everything I've been through in my life) and was going to get Xena back...one way or another...but the guilt that was overtaking me when I 1st heard about this, seen the pics, all the way up to the 1st few weeks she was here, it was overwhelming...I've NEVER felt that much guilt about ANYTHING in my life before...how could I, someone who this mare trusted and had raised her, send her to this place and have her endure pain, probably brutal breedings, foaling and having her life hang on by a thread????...the guilt was horrendous...it's getting better, still there, but better...
trust me...everyone has their role in life...if we were all the same, it'd not only be a boring world, but there would be gaps in the important *small* roles that are needed down the line that no one thinks about...transporting dogs, housing animals, rehabing animals, rescuing animals, donations....they all play a role...
and don't quit whining...that shows compassion...it shows passion...it means you care...the day people quit caring, that's when the animals are in trouble...keep whining, yelling, screaming, fighting..............if nothing else...it helps our OWN mental health...there needs to be more voices

I hear the frustration in your hearts !!! and I sometimes too get really angry with peoples cruelty, and have to sit back and wonder if its as much cruelty at times as it is lack of knowledge or just flat out stupidity and ignorance, for example this mare Im talking about. I felt like I dropped the ball on her, and sent a lovely well seasoned riding horse away to be starved and neglected thru a harsh winter that nearly killed her. When the Human Society called me from their property , they had arrived there to find many dead and dying animals, and when they were told that this horse had come from the year before, right away they made contact with us to see if we could take her in at go the distance in whatever she needed, Thank God that our local Humane Society Large Animal Rescue are awesome, under paid , over worked ,good friends of the family here and made the call to us to let us know what was happening wih a former horses of ours. To see her come off the trailer in that condition and heavy in foal, was nothing short of heartache.. When I a few days had passed, and I felt I could speak to them without making death threats !!! and I phoned these people to ask " What The Hell Happened Here " Their answer was one that falls into the Stupidity Bucket.. She said when I asked why they didnt call me if they were in trouble with feed or felt they couldnt look after the horse " I didnt want you to think that I couldnt look after a horse " Hello !!!!! was it intention cruelty..No , I dont think so, ignorance YES.
And then there are the folks like little Mamma Ponies owner, again just North of us, and she drove by all the time and seen many horses and kids here riding, and when she started to run into financial trouble with the lose of her job and had a gelding being very mean to the pony and she didnt have anyway of keeping Mamma safe to foal away from this gelding, and had no real idea of how far along the Pony was it came to her possibly in foal, the first thing she did was stop in and ask if we would like a Childrens Pony , heavy in foal, explained she needed to place her before the pony started to suffer any, she was blind on one side, but sweet and kind with kids.. Did we need a PONY..NO !!! but we took her in, and again she foaled the following week !!! But that woman stops in and has become a great friend of the farm here, and when she found work again and got back on her feet, she is always dropping off a bag or root carrots or goodies for all the horses here , shes a cabinet maker and has made all of us nice saddle stands and it re-stores my faith in Human's. Hopefully for every bad story we hear, there's 3 good ones !!!
February 23, 2010 10:16PM
FINALLY got around to sending Dr. Mike the pics...hope I get a thumbs up from the vet!...after all, he saved her life down there
February 24, 2010 01:51AM
He should be quite happy that all his hard work is paying off! The horses are doing well and have a chance to a second life!
February 25, 2010 12:23AM
Hey Lori,
Xena looks marvelous!!! Thank you so much for committing yourself to her. I was reading about the disgust and frustration talked about above. We all feel that at one time or another. But...then you see horses like Xena and the others of the LUCKY 48 and you realize why you do what you do. We fight the good fight. Do we always win? Heck no. Do we always do the right thing? Well, unfortunately no we don't. But we do our best. Sometimes we give people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes we are right, sometimes we are wrong. I became involved with Speak Up For Horses because folks like Annie and Shelly are committed to truth and doing what we believe is the right thing. I don't know of two more honest and caring people. For them, it is all about the horses. I wish you could meet the other horses. You would want to bring every last one of them home with you. Unfortunately they are not close to Annie and I. Shelly works with them daily, which is not an easy task or trip for her.
When the weather clears and this darn foot heals, Annie and I will get updated pictures. You will fall in love.
February 25, 2010 06:19PM
oh Paulette...I check the site weekly to see who has been added and who has found a home...and there are a few there that I would bring home in a heartbeat!...
no we don't always win...but we do the best we can...it is so frustrating at times...as you know...and there were times during this *ordeal* with Xena that I broke down and felt like there was no hope...but you have your little boo hoo moment...pull your socks up and get right back at 'er!...the words "give up" are NOT in my vocabulary when it's something I truly believe in...I just hate the fact that "that woman" got the money from me she did...and then the guts to keep asking me for money after Xena was here????...even if I didn't own Xena before, did she think I was blind and just missed the fact that the mares feet were horrendous and that she was pretty much skin and bones and cut all to rat sh..........poop? she had some nerve...there's luckily people out there like you and Annie and Shelly that do it on a daily basis...I only rescued 1...but she was the most important one to me at the time and now that she's back in my care...she's as important as the other 5...and before you know it, she'll be foaling and hopefully that foal has a chance at life...this experience has sure made me check into who is actually buying my horses...you always hope that they find a good life at their new home, but sometimes, you just never know...unfortunately, Xena was the unlucky one...good thing she's one tuff cookie!!!!
you guys keep up the good work...you are those horses angels!

AWWWW, she's a Doll, and looks nice , sturdy and plump, what breed was the Stallion ? look's like a little QH Filly to me, simply lovely.. Congrat's

Dad is either KY's New Chex To Cash or Mo Poco Leo.
Both reining/cutting QH's.

March 3, 2010 10:25PM
Hi Annie...out of those 2 I'd put my money on Mo Poco Leo...the Nu Chex stud seemed to be pretty dominate in throwing palomino's/dun's...but what about KYS Command Finale?...would he be an option?...that's the one that *that woman* said she saw breeding Xena...guess Xena was in his herd...so the AQHA paperwork begins when Xena's baby hits the ground...but working with a terrific lady there and says we'll get the foal registered one way or another...
March 10, 2010 10:29PM
KY's Command Finale is a bay (well he is pretty red actually, that's why we call him Red). I don't know anything about what colors you get when breeding, LOL.
March 11, 2010 09:53AM
lol...well I dabble in the the color crosses genetics, and from what I've seen, that Nu Chex horse was pretty dominate in throwing the creme gene (so palomino's, buckskin's, smoky black's) for the life of me, I'm drawing a blank on the color of Mo Poco Leo (I haven't had my coffee yet)...bay? buckskin?...anyways, I know that "Red" is a bay because like I said, that's who *that woman* said Xena was bred to...I guess as long as their healthy and not going to be registered, it's not that big of a deal...they're still cute as buttons though aren't they???
March 11, 2010 11:59AM
Well at least Xena will have enough to nurse a foal this time, and not have to give up her body to keep a baby fed, no matter the color, this baby is already a winner !!!
March 11, 2010 12:52PM
yes, she'll have more energy, milk, and body to support a baby...so there's a good chance that this one will live...not like 3 out of the 6 others that didn't...not all food or mothering related...1 I guess died of a broken shoulder/leg???...and another died *mysteriously*
March 11, 2010 11:40PM
Awwww, I hope she get's to raise a healthy baby this time, she deserves it, with the care she's getting now , chances are it will be a beauty. It's like a nice mare my daughter rides and games with here Excalibur's Miss Kitt "Kitt " she's in foal for May this year with her second baby to Quintons Stallion , we're keeping our fingers crossed for her , as her first foal born to her at her former home 3 years ago, was born big and healthy, a real cracker filly , she had her early in the morning, and the folks were fairly new to horses and not knowing, turned her out her first day into a mixed herd and with in a hour the foal was dead on the ground, caught in a cross kick and stamped by a proud cut Gelding. I'm told Kitt mourned her baby terrible and wouldnt allow the owners to pick her up off the ground for hours, kept charging at them, and then she lost a lot of weight over the next few weeks.. And here, she's always been very protective of the babies, she was one of the horses that ran with Thunder and Jimmy the night the wolves separted the pony baby from her Mom, I didnt even have to ask if Kitt was one of the ones that ran with the baby, It was a given that she would be there..
March 12, 2010 09:45AM
some mares are GREAT mothers and just have *it*...some are good/ok moms and others just suck...I've got a mare here like your Kitt...LOVES being a mom...loves the whole experience, being pregnant, foaling, nursing...everything...I've seen the foal in the last trimester start kicking inside her, would've swore the lil bugger was going to kick right through, Grace just grunted and kept on eating...I have another here...she HATES being pregnant....that foal starts moving around and you'd think she was dying...lol...she's a great mom once it's out, but she's just a huge wimp while she's carrying...I have a paint mare here, 1st time being bred this spring...she reminds me alot of Xena at her age, she's a big, goofy goat...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well...the stud owner assures me that his stud is very gentle on mares (he only covers live) and has bred plenty of maiden mares...so here's to hoping!
March 14, 2010 10:51AM
Mo Poco Leo was registered as a dun.
If Xena was bred to "Red" (I don't know how "that woman" would know who bred who) you will have one SMART baby. He is amazing. He is also 15 hands, so taller than the others.
I took more pix yesterday and here is "Red":
He was still dirty when I took the pix, brushed him after. I know, that was backwards.

March 14, 2010 11:03AM
thanx for the pics Annie...hope you had fun out there with them yesterday...sounds like Paulette's chomping at the bit to get off that walker and get out there with ya's!...
Red was a nicely bred stud...so yes the baby should be smart...and Xena had a filly before (little bay that died) and I'm not sure if it was sired by him or not, but if it was...boy was she PRETTY!...hope that the foal turns out JUST as pretty as that one...
are the studs gelded yet?...
Now that you say that Mo Poco Leo was registered as a dun, it's all coming back to me...
yes, *that woman* said that after she was let out of jail the 1st time, after Dr. Mike was out there still feeding but she was videoing him, that she watched Xena be bred by this stud...I guess we'll find out, thanx to DNA testing...like I've said, I'm working with a specific girl in AQHA and we'll get this foal registered one way or another...even though *that woman* didn't file her stud reports for the year (not knowing HOW she could anyways, how could she know who bred who with all them horses?) due to the fact of when they were due to be in, she was back in jail...I highly doubt that she filed them before she went back in...
Anyone hear anything about her or what she's doing?...hope she's not getting more animals...when my cousin went to pick up Xena, she said there were a couple dogs out there that looked skinny and were not the friendliest...BUT, *that woman* DID make a point to have feed sitting out in view for my cousin and her husband to see.........how sneaky is that?
March 15, 2010 05:19PM
One of those dogs actually bit one of Dr. Mike's helpers. They weren't skinny when we went out there. Wonder what happened to them.
We have had Mate gelded, next will be Scooter, he recently dropped and his adoption is pending until after he goes under the knife, LOL.
We'll go from there, one at a time, so they can get individual attention and exercise.
For being studs, they are just the sweetest horses. As long as you carry a bucket of feed, they'll follow you to the moon.
When do you think Xena is due?
Oh yeah, Paulette is ticked off. Hopefully next time she'll be healed up enough to come along.
Annie
March 15, 2010 06:15PM
lol...I bet she's ticked...nice weather is coming/here and she's stuck on a walker!
well...when the vet preg checked her, he said she was about 3-4 months along...so that puts her May/June...my other mare is due near the end of May (it was a late breeding date I KNOW!) so hopefully they'll foal somewhat close together...oh well, one thing I've learned, you'll NEVER force a mare to foal...she'll deliver when she's good and ready...Grace has broken ALL old wives tales, rules, myths...her 1st filly was 3 weeks late, her 2nd filly was 2 weeks early, her 3rd colt was 2 weeks late.......wonder what this one will be?...1 week early? if there's ANY pattern with her, she should be early this year...lol...oh well...
lol...it's funny that you say if you carry a bucket of feed.........for horses that were starving...lol
obviously I wasn't there with my cousin to pick her up (I probably would've jumped on *that woman* and started wailing on her), but I remember my cousin saying that the dogs were on the skinny side and not very nice...sucks that 1 of them bit 1 of Dr. Mike's helpers...hope they had their tetnus shot...
all the ponies look good on your website...I'm hoping they all have potential adopters for them...I'm somewhat partial to Ethel and Kys Magic Bar Chex myself...just something about them
March 30, 2010 04:25PM
just thought I'd give an update...
the farrier was out last Thursday (sorry for the delay, was gone on the weekend and been busy) and did Xena's feet...he took off about 3/4 of an inch of heel, that was all he touched this trip...said maybe next trip he'd do something with the toe...but here's the GREAT news...when Xena first got here, you all saw the pics of the 2 holes in the bottom of her foot from the absess/infection?...and the sole was also soft and you could pick it off if you had any sort of fingernails?...well this trip, he pared(?) away a very healthy, STRONG sole and the holes are gone and the absess/infection is completely gone with no signs of anything else coming!...the sole was what it was supposed to be like, hard/tough/strong and said she's coming along GREAT!...she is alittle sore with the 3/4 drop and having to stretch those tendons some, but he felt so confident in the foot being strong enough that she could handle it...before, he didn't want to change angles too drastically as her foot was so soft he was worried about her coffin bone coming out the bottom...so this is good news!...we're past the "delicate" stage and back on track to getting her "sound"...we've been down this road before with her, but it just sucks that we had to start all over...
I have sent pics to GP to post...I took them today, let me know what you guys think...I see her everyday and I guess the progress is un-noticeable with me...I'm not seeing a DRASTIC change myself...but for you guys that only get pics, you may see a very drastic change...she doesn't look extremely pregnant (due May/June) but I don't want her to be overweight with that foot...I guess since she's in with my other pregnant mare (who looks like a pig...fat enough to throw on a spit!...lol) she looks small...but while I was out taking those pics this morning...I thought to myself, I'd LOVE to send a pic to "that woman" and scream "THIS IS WHAT A HEALTHY, PREGNANT MARE IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE!!!"...but I don't think I should...lol
the vet is coming out Thursday to do Xena's chiro adjustment (we both joke how we each need one too, but the horses have it better then us) and a couple other stuff...lovely wolf teeth in young horses...gotta love how they're normal one day and bats**t squirrely the next with those teeth in their heads...but we'll get them knocked out and they'll be their lovely, sweet selves again...I've seen it time and again...
anyways, just thought I'd give an update....hope you guys have time to leave a comment and tell me what you think once GP has time to get the pics up...
April 11, 2010 09:12AM
Lori,
the paint is a DOLL. He won't even let you take pix, he always has to be in your face for pets.
And he is getting FAT.
Here he is a couple of weeks ago:
[ i35.photobucket.com]
Paulette is finally back on her feet, still needs to wear a boot for a while, and now her other foot hurts from putting too much weight on it.
But she managed to come out and visit the kids last weekend and we are planning to visit again next Saturday.
The paint and the "red" stallion are scheduled to get snipped this coming Friday.
There are actually some mares in the bunch that aren't pregnant. Thank God.
We think Dolly is the next to drop a foal. Here she is last weekend:
[ i35.photobucket.com]
Hope Xena is doing well, sounds like her feet are coming around nicely. I would love to see pix!
Annie
April 11, 2010 09:45AM
"Paintface" DOES look like a chunky monkey...that's great!...and Dolly does look like she's ready to pop soon...everyone's looking pretty good there...that's great to see...
I sent GP pics to post on here a couple weeks ago...hope they go through to her...I know she's probably busy (as we all are now that the nice weather has hit) and hasn't had alot of time...I'm just a complete moron when it comes to posting pics on here...I can't even put a link up right!...lol...but yes, Xena is doing good...had the farrier and vet out for her chiro appt...she's getting better and better everyday...it's just that foot that is any sort of reminder of *that woman* now...she's fat and shiny and slick now...she's starting to look very pregnant and is out with my other pregnant mare and I figure they won't be too far off from foaling from one another...Grace is due at the end of May (but the stinkin' mare has NEVER kept to a schedule when it comes to foaling...could be early, could be late...she's never been right on) but Xena shouldn't be too far behind her...
Seen the pics of Beauty's handsome little man that was born...so glad that there's been no problems yet with any foalings...think everyone got out of there and got good food and care before anything can go wrong...but just in case, I'm going to be sticking close to Xena when she's ready...don't want a repeat of last year with her and Dr. Mike...
keep them pics coming!...love to see them...glad to hear Paulette's up and gimping around!...tell everyone I say hi!
April 11, 2010 10:11AM
I am busy around here, but I have not received any pics of Xena in quite some time and those were posted. I even checked my spam box, but nothing.... can you try resending them?

She is beautiful!!! Can't wait to see what she has been cooking all this time!!! Any bets?
I watch too much Marestare!!!
April 15, 2010 07:40PM
lol...you're not the only one that bets FI!...every year, when the time is close...my boyfriend, mom and I make bets...and the one stud owner gets in on *her* baby too...we each put in a twoonie and bet and whoever wins, gets the money...or closest anyways...we've got to be specific though...ex: red roan colt/bay filly...and sex over powers color...it's complicated...but it's a good laugh...my bet is that Xena is going to have a bay filly...and Grace is going to have a red roan colt...AGAIN...I've been wanting a filly out of Grace by that stud for years now and she'll only give me colts by him!...stud owner says colt again this year...I say filly...but I'm pretty sure Xena will have a bay (possibly sorrel) filly...she's had NOTHING but fillies as far as I know (6)...so watch, she'll have a colt for me!...lol
April 15, 2010 11:47PM

WAITING FOR THE BABY HERE!
April 25, 2010 08:52AM
so I had a thought when I was at the feed store yesterday...I'm thinking of putting together a binder of Xena's story and leaving it at the feed mill so people can read a "local" story of abuse and neglect...my friend owns the store and I'm sure she'd have no problem with anything I ask of her...what's everyone think?...I'd just have to find time to put a binder together!
April 25, 2010 01:29PM
I think it would be a great idea! Make sure it is open or there is a picture of skinny Xena on the cover!!! and pictures of her pasture friends too.
April 26, 2010 10:40AM
Yup, I agree wonderful idea
April 26, 2010 02:12PM
Very Good Idea, I think sometimes they hear of it, but until they see it with their own eye's , it isn't a reality to them outside of their happy life of animal's..and Xena would tell a wonderful story of rescue and recovery.
April 27, 2010 07:12AM
ok...thanx guys...I was going to include before and after pics and like I said, I just thought a "local" story might actually pull at their hearts and get people aware that this is happening and some cases are serious (death, euthanasia, etc)...and I agree with you Crazy, it isn't a reality until they see it with their own eyes...but some people can't even handle the story...I can't tell my mom about hardly ANYTHING without her getting upset let alone seeing pics or watching video's...she hasn't even seen the latest newsletter that Speak Up For Horses sent me because it shows a dead horse and a stud's badly injured leg on it... ...but I'll try to get something made up and show it to you guys as well...perhaps AFTER breeding/foaling season dies down...
May 9, 2010 08:38AM
Xena is starting to bag up alittle...you know the bag up over night because she's standing in a stall but down when you bring her in in the evening part?....she's at that stage...so I'm guessing another month maybe?
May 9, 2010 09:38PM
Well wax tonight coming from Miss Kitt's teat's, and Thank God its a nice night and she's out on the hill with Jenna , baby Jilly and Thunder, because box stalling her in last night made her so ancy and the rest of the herd hung around her door very restless too.. keeping my fingers crossed...
May 10, 2010 07:01AM
good luck crazyacres...my fingers are crossed for you!...keep us updated
May 10, 2010 12:27PM
Nothing yet Guy's, she's a buggar for sure, she went down to the ground about 2 last night and stayed there, with very snappy pressure pain's, back arched, tail up, slow graon moaning.. i thought for certain she would have by first light, but NOPE, she got back up and is on the hill having an all you can eat buffet at the round bale, but the herd know's she is close, they never left this morning for their roam at all, and are all hovering around the 3 sides of the hill yard ,staying pretty close by !!..and baby Jillian is most interested in her Auntie Kitt's utter as well !!! her Mommy doesnt think that is so funny, but Kitt is content to let her nuzzle under !!!
June 7, 2010 09:19PM
sorry I haven't been around much, but been EXTREMELY busy...still waiting on Xena to foal...she's getting close...but just thought I'd pass this on to everyone...
Speak Up For Horses just got more press coverage and are looking for donations (if possible)...and also included is a news article about the "Lucky 48"...
hope this link works...

Cutting girl, what has been the final outcome of the woman that was responsible for these poor horses and Xena ????
June 8, 2010 08:09PM
well...for "that woman"...she went to jail for abit...had all her horses taken away and her farm sold...that's all I know for now...don't think any of us have had much new info passed our way since the horses were seized and such...
as for Xena...I bought her back from "that woman" before the horses were seized because she kept getting the court date delayed and it was getting late in the year and I didn't think Xena would survive another winter...so I bit my tongue, acted like I didn't know what was going on, and talked her into selling her back to me...once she was here, she wanted more money from me for "expenses" (which cost me about $2000 more then what was expected because she had NONE of the paperwork right and I had to have it ALL redone) and I pretty much told her to stick it...so needless to say, I haven't talked to her since...
Xena is happier (with that bad foot, and being HEAVY in foal, she's alittle grouchy again) now...getting fed, brushed, loved, has a stall at night, bathed, brought in out of bad weather, getting chiro adjustments...the life she USED to have...after she foals out...she's going to have at least a year off from being bred (this will be her 7th foal in 7 years) and I'm just going to work on getting her back to 100% again...she's NEVER leaving my hands again...I was there when she was born, I'll be there when she dies...MANY years from now
June 8, 2010 08:23PM
That's awesome !! I wasnt here when all of this un folded, so have just caught bits and peices of the story, but seen your up dated pics of her and was really impressed at well shes done since getting to your place.. Send her extra Money !!!!! yeah right... Xena is lucky to have got out of there while she was still early on in her pregnancy, at least her baby will be healthy, not always the story for us here, in the past couple of years, we have had 3 brought to us , that all foaled within the week, so not a lot of time to get them on the mend, and the poor wee babies really struggle to survive, but all made it and 2 are still here with us.. Good luck with the new babes, and lots of Piccies please !!! do you have a confirmed foaling date for her ??
June 9, 2010 07:11AM
no confirmed foaling date...no known breeding date...so it's the wait and see game...is she? isnt she?...
Xena's foal was born dead last year and Xena damn near died herself, if it wasn't for Dr. O'Bryan (who was court appointed to feed the horses, NOTHING else, while "that woman" did one of her stints in jail) catching her foaling, Xena would have died probably...she's had 6 foals down there in KY...only 3 lived...I was told by "that woman" that 1 had a broken leg or something, she wasn't sure???...another she found dead in the pasture with a broken jaw...and then last years was born dead...no wonder...if you got back to the very top of this thread, GP has posted pics for me..the one where she's standing in front of a truck, she foaled a month after that, she didn't even have enough strength for herself let along a foal...so no wonder it died...but I KNOW this one still is...she was having a party in there last night bouncing around!!!!...she was rocking Xena, that's how much she was moving!
June 9, 2010 09:12AM
Thank God for that !!!! What a rotten past life for this mare, it's so sickning..we too sold a beautiful riding mare to folk's and when returned to us a year later she was heavy in foal and in horrible condition, she nearly died as well in foaling, it took all of us and a sling to the stall rafters to get her to her feet, then a fight to save the baby, if she had foaled at her other place, it is with certainty she and foal would have both died laying in the field.... cant wait to see Xena's new baby, what a releif it will be to her to raise a foal in good conditions..it goes to show you how bad her living situation was , when a domestic " starving " penned in herd starts to kill of and injure foals as their survival of the fittest kicks in and they try and preserve future food stocks for themselves.. so , so sad !!!!
June 9, 2010 07:41PM
soooo true crazyacres...so true...
so farrier was out tonight...said the "bad" foot is doing WONDERFUL and that she looks like she's about to pop any day now...wish she would go ahead and have the damn thing already!...I'm exhausted from checking on her!...but back to the foot...all is good, nice hard sole again...no smell...no bleeding...alittle bruising, but nothing to be concerned about...no absess'...no puss...so we're doing good!!!...knocked somemore heel off and slightly took some toe off (1st time since she's gotten home)...but all in all, everything looks great...so that's some good news at least!
