Hoping someone can help us with this (shameful!) problem. Two or our house cats have developed pretty severe mats, mainly along their backs (I know, I know - should've brushed them out long ago! :eye-roll: )
One is long haired, one short. I'm afraid its beyond brushing or cutting out - tried the clippers but the mats are close to the skin now and am afraid will hurt/injure the cats. Any suggestions/experience with this?

an undercoat rake and a comb will remove a lot. Just a bit at a time. That should work for the short hair. For the long hair you might have to go to a groomer with access to a vet for sedation..depending how bad it is.

Thanks brisky - that's what I feared - sedation required etc...fortunately the long hair Ms. Beezy is not as bad as the short hair Georgie.
I take it that an undercoat rake can be found at a pet store?

sorry for the multi posts don't know how that happened. Yes a pet store is the place to find a rake.

never tried it, but after seeing what it did for my horses, maybe try the cowboy magic stuff? maybe worth a try - bring her for a visit and we can try it if you don't want to buy it, we have some left ;)

our cat had that problem awhile ago and it just took time and working from the end to the root with a comb and lots of patience and petting (that was before I discovered the cowboy magic) ;)

Oh - that's a nice offer doubleL! I just bought some kinda comb/rake thingy...I'll give that a whirl over a week or so and see if I make any progress before bugging you further. The trouble is time and focus to keep at it - of course the barn cats are all in perfect shape as that is where I end up spending all my time and energy working etc lol ;)

I would wonder about cowboy magic...as cats lick themselves it might not be a good idea

good point Brisky, but I guess a bath after might overcome that issue if it does work, any way you cut it, sounds like a lot of work :(

Yes - probably a lot less work/painful if tended in a more timely fashion...
(excuse me whilst I go raking...
