Anyone Else Feel Like They Are Drowning??

Holy January rain we're getting!!! We had a couple hours of freezing rain last night, then its been pouring rain since. Some snow has melted, I haven't actually been OUT yet this morning, but I have a bad feeling that everything is going to be very slick! The poor spoiled goats will be staying locked in the shed today, we're only about half way through the rain, another 20mm to go... then the temp will start to drop and everything will be a skating rink for sure.
This is disgusting and I would almost prefer this all fell as snow, though it would bury us! Rain, in January? I thought I left that behind when I moved out of Southern Ontario!!!
How's everyone else fairing?
GP who is procrastinating going out in the *RAIN* Gah!

Sarnia area: light rain here...what little snow we had is patchy now...got mud puddles galore and same as you...temps will be falling and they are saying this rain is supposed to turn into scattered flurries...so ya, any puddles will turn to a skating rink...everyone be careful with the ponies and other critters outside...had a gelding a couple years ago slip on ice and pretty much tear his armpit muscle...took him MONTHS before he didn't have a limp

Now that I've been outside... Its disgusting out there. The snow in the driveway has all turned to ice... the snow is coming off our roof in big heavy wet sheets, right above where we walk in the door, so its a mad rush to avoid being smushed by the falling heavy snow! Shawn almost got it in the head this morning, it fell right in front of him when he was going to go inside... scared him pretty good
The goats are miserable and blame me for this weather, of course, the little spoiled shits. Speaking of "shit"... my job today is to go out in the rain and clean up a winter's worth of wet dog shit.
Really, its a wet dog shit kind of day.

Waterloo - Rain yesterday and it is snowing now! It is wet snow, but I can see the precipitation!!! I wish all that came down yesterday had been snow... Now I really have to go and clean the backyard....

They have this nifty thing at African Lion Safari that drags behind a tractor and tosses all the buffalo etc poop and onto it. That's the way to go.

Here in Milton it also continues to pour...My driveway is sheer ice and I mean ice. Paddocks not so bad but I'll be dropping a couple of bags of salt anyway. Temp's are suppose to drop overnight and I'm hoping we get a bit of fresh snow on top. People are cancelling Physio appointments for fear of freezing rain tonight of which I did not hear??? (not for Milton anyway) Stopping on my way home to get more salt

Gruff, I've seen that thing, its awesome Wish I had one... with big snow tires on it!
We still have plenty of snow, though you can see grass in some places in the yard now. I got most of the dog crap cleaned up, 8 garbage bags worth (they weren't full though, I lined a 5 gallon bucket with garbage bags and filled that up, couldn't carry much more than that and did NOT want to risk having the bags split open!
The rain seems to have stopped here, at least for the last hour or so. The sun was actually out for about 20 minutes and I let the goats out of the shed to help combat their stir crazies. (Stir crazy goats are not as fun as you might think!! )
Its clouding over again now and I imagine soon *something* will start falling from the sky again, its pretty warm right now, but we're supposed to get "mixed precipitation" this evening ending with wet snow.
In spite of sand/salting the driveway this morning, its pretty much glare ice now... a couple bare spots, but right in the center of the driveway which doesn't help me driving in and out! Might have to go and sand/salt it again, but I'm procrastinating, that's a major pain the butt. I think most of the mornings washed away in the heavy rain.
I wish all the rain had fallen as snow instead, though it would've buried us for sure... still having rain in January just doesn't seem good. Last I heard we'll have got about 50 - 60 mm of rain with this system. Lovely.
Bracing for the next phase!

We had rain and snow most of the day, now we've got freezing rain so I'm glad the ponies are all in already.

Normally I love a good rain, but this was terrible! All it did was smooth out and thicken the ice in the paddock Im hoping it snows before it gets much colder in the hopes the snow will make it less slick.
I spent today empty ing the snadbox and piling it around the hay feeder to give the ponies some higher ground, then I dug up the soil underneath to make a bridge to the little shed, and to build up the floor in the big one before I lay down a thick mat of shavings. Too much water in one field, too much ice in the other!
and poor Toby was shivering like mad when I got out there, so I draped him in the mares blanket for a few hours.

Well it snowed a bit this morning. When I clean up doggie poop, I am so glad to have only one (big mind you)! I filled one salt bag... but there was a lot of frozen snow too. I don't want to take the risk of the "sanitation engineers" refusing to take it at the curb!
My friends East of Ottawa got their basement flooded yesterday (rain and thaw...).
Going to the barn now to see what it is like out there... I hate mud!!!
January 26, 2010 06:23PM
GP & FI...I thought I had done ALOT when I picked up 6 of the little doggie poop bags (the ones you can carry when you're walking) from my dogs...I have 2 (1 yr olds on the 28th!...so excited to put little hats on them) corgi *puppies*...I kept the yard picked up pretty good until we had some snow come through in january...we had about a foot all in all...have only had to plow the driveway once this winter and that was mostly for drifts, not for deep snow...so I guess we've been pretty lucky here...but the dog poop patrol was out yesterday when things were melting and I didn't have to chip it out...I'm sure I'll find more...can't wait

LOL Sixhorses...I can't even begin to imagine...
January 26, 2010 10:28PM
You win sixhorses! I only have the 2 dogs (about 75 lbs each) and got 8 garbage bags of poop (ok there's more out there, but it was hiding under snow, I wasn't going to DIG for it!)... I can't imagine how much poop must be in your yard!! Maybe you need a front end loader instead of a shovel and bucket!

Sixhorses..ummm ya, I have no pity for you. Pick a smaller dog(S) next time. egads.
I didnt clean the run, I did buy some shavings to throw on the old poo
Theres a dog scooping business that will come do a one time clean here. Im thinking a big tip will go far.
January 27, 2010 03:56PM
I had considered hiring a poop scooping business to come clean the yard this spring, but for me it would be like hiring a house cleaner, I'd have to clean before they arrived so they wouldn't know what messy slobs we are! Would kinda defeat the purpose, I know, but I would hate for someone to come and see the yard like that!!

Just so you know...
I build a big fire in the yard, Get it nice and hot... then I start the clean up... works like a charm...
(no weanie roast THAT day) Any parasites are gone and so is the disposal. If the fire is hot enough there is no odor at all!

Really, I meant "enquiring" minds want to know!
January 27, 2010 08:25PM
Ah I wondered how you dealt with all those massive poops! I never considered doing that... I'd have to read the bylaws to see what sort of burning I can get away with here... I know some people down the road burn garbage often... generally when the wind is headed OUR way, but I know Ottawa has all sorts of rules about burning... think I'd need a permit for any sort of fire. Something to consider... thanks SixDOGS

for once i can join in on a weather topic! minus the freezing parts.
5 straight days of rain last week.
helicopters dropping off food for stranded towns.
the 2 ski resorts were closed! one because of no power, the other because of possible avalanches.
we don't ever say 'avalanches' around here!
my neighborhood was ok, no flooding from runoff from the mountain just north of me.
tons of mud. great. just when i'm solving the thrush on nimrod's feet.
i think the plumbing out back may be broken again since i slipped into a foot deep hole right by where i fixed it. i can fix it again. i'm a bad plumber. might have to 'fix' it a coupla more times.
good news is i picked up all the horse poo before the rain. moved most of it to the house side of the yard. covered the dog poo with it. i see grass starting to poke out. yay! can't see dog poo.
better news is i bagged up 4 bags of horse poo before the rain, and the 'eccentric' old man who has a key to one of my back gates came by today and gave me $20 for the bagged horse poo.
he wants to drop off another $20. ok.
i will no longer call it 'horse poo', the new name is 'brown gold'. lol!
a little more rain today. weird weather here. i like the clouds since i can't find my sunglasses.
