Another Standardbred in need

My good friend's husband is a trainer and he's trying to find a home for one of the horses:

Bay, 15 hand, gelding, standardbred pacer. He is very friendly, sweet, and loves attention. He hasn't been turned out since July but before that was turned out with other horses no problem. He broke a sesamoid back in July but was given a bunch of time off and came back sound to race decently in a couple starts. But he's now started locking on a line bad and did not race well in his last start so the trainer and the owner are stopping with him as they don't want to break him down. He doesn't look lame but just won't make it back as a racehorse. The owner is willing to give him away as long as it's a good, non-racing home. Unfortunately, he doesn't want to pay any more board and wants him gone by Monday or will mennonite him (and with a small pacer with past issues, he'll probably end up at Kitchener pretty fast :( ). He's near Flamborough Downs and the trainer would be willing to ship him if it's not too far away.

If anyone would like him or knows someone who would, please let me know! laurakenzie@hotmail.com

Thanks!!!

Good for you Laura for reaching out for this guy. Just in case and given time constraints - have you considered OSAS at all....

Problem gruff is he's at a training centre, so the stalls worth more than u would think. If I didn't just have one arrive yesterday- I'd take him in a heart beat. Still networking like mad....

Monday doesnt leave much time-

As a last resort I can offer to squeeze him with the fat ponies temporarily(very temporarily), but he'd be living out (and may not have the coat for it), plus the ice may not be ideal for integration, but its better than the meat market :(

I've asked my friend what a month's board is worth and if the owner would be willing to keep him provided he was paid for, just to give us more time - I'll keep everyone posted as to what she says.

I've sure he'd like living out a lot better than being at a mennonites/kitchener! I know of a couple places he could potentially be boarded at if people were willing to put the money out but then what happens if a home isn't found in a month...?

I know Monday isn't a lot of time, I posted as soon as I found out.

Thanks so much for your help and offers thus far everyone!!!

My friend said they could potentially keep him until the end of the week but that they might need the stall...BUT it doesn't really matter as I'm 99.9% sure he's found a home! :) I never say 100% until the new person has the horse but both parties say it's a go! A wonderful lady I know who has taken in and rehomed many STBDs and TBs (and posted on here from time to time but I don't remember what her board name was) has agreed to take him in as well. I know he will be in great hands with her. :)

A HUGE thanks to everyone who helped with ideas and $ offers and support but now you can save it for the next poor soul who needs a chance. :)

What a hypocrit!! Sorry, the owner was a GOOD home... but only till Monday! After that, he can go to a mennonite home where he will be used and abused. Sheesh. If you want a good home for your horse, you want a GOOD home, with no deadline...

Rant over. I hope poor horse gets lucky!

I know, but the owner is looking at it from a business perspective (which although I don't always agree with, I understand) and has actually given the horse much more of a chance (from giving him the time off to recover to not shipping directly) than a lot of owners would have. Although I understand where you're coming from, FI, I'm just glad he gave the horse any chance at all to go on to a good home. This standardbred is luckier than a lot of them.

Perhaps owners looking at things with the "business perspective" is the main reason why so many horses end up in less than idea situations..or on a dinner plate in Belgium. I know I know, this has been discussed and pondered til the cows come home!

oops.. I made a type... I meant to say the owner "wants" a good home, not "was"... I understand what you are saying Laura, but if you really want your horse to have a good home, you don't put an short dead line like that. Off my soap box.

Glad this worked out :) Just drove home in the near blizzard conditions on the highway and slowly passed a buggy with 3 completely bundled (and frozen I'm sure) people. They were running that horse so hard in this weather with a heavy load, I have to wonder with a lump in my throat if he/she will survive the day/night/trip.
Like I say, glad it worked out.

Hi Laura,

I hope the gelding's home works out (fingers crossed) he is a very sweet boy. And YES the owner has spent much time and money on him but as it goes in racing we all know an empty stall, or a stall with a horse laid up or not making money doesn't stay around long. I sent a text to "Danny" last night because I possibly had a girlfriend who was looking for a pasture ornament/companion for her pony but as like everyone else she can find one also for free too easily. Anyway, not to take away from the original post of finding him a home but I know the background on him as well and the owner did give him time off and such rather than just racing him until he became someone else's problem and broke down, at least now he hopfully has a home with a bright future. Good work and good luck, he's a deserving horse - they ALL are for that matter, but one at a time is all we can do, and that is definately better than nothing at all!
