I have a few horse / animal books that are looking for a new home. I am making a trip from Ottawa to Kitchener the weekend of February 13 &14 (exact plans to be determined) and would be glad to drop them off at their new home anywhere along that route. If you really want one / some and aren't on that route, I will ship them, but you'll have to pay for shipping.

If you are interested, please post to this thread, so all in the info is in one place and I don't promise the same book to more than one person. When you post, please include your email address and I will email you to set up delivery.

My final destination is technically North Waterloo, minutes from OLEX... but I'm happy to make stops along the 401 as long as they are just off the 401. (Its a long enough drive without adding too many extra km's ;) )

I will send emails later this week :)

So, North Waterloo... you have NO excuse GP... you better give me a ring! Remember I live in North Waterloo too....
I did a dog transport today and will probably do another one next weekend. But not the 13/14th (can't afford $50 of gas every trip!! - but the dogs are wonderful... and out of the 5 I had today, 3 were going to Ottawa - Plantagenet...)

Hope to see you then!!

FI, I'll be making a trip back the following weekend also...so I'm hoping that on one of those weekends we can find a few mins to visit ;) The valentine's weekend might be a very quick trip in and out.... of course all my plans hinge on the weather :eye-roll:

Glad to hear you're still doing transports.... if my plans were firmer I could probably bring dogs back with me on either weekend... I have the room, seems a shame to not bring them! ;) hmm, wonder how I can fix that. I'll have to think more on that!!

We should do something. How's that for an embryonic suggestion?

Awesome Gruff ;)

I'd be up for a short get together while I'm in town if anyone else is interested. Perhaps at a local restaurant or something so no one has all the work and trouble of hosting?

I'm open to suggestions! :)

well, I will keep you posted as far as the transports. There are always dogs in need of transport down 401 and frequently up to Ottawa... :)

Thanks FI that would be great... I do only have one available dog crate though, which sucks. I'll have to see what I can do about that! ;)

I got quite a few dog crates through kijiji (4 big ones for $100)... but you don't have to crate them all, you can tether them (if they get along..). This weekend I had 2 catahoulas (going to Ottawa) and 3 Jrts (2 stayed in Guelph w/ a foster and one went to Kingston). See the pictures here...

Next weekend, I will do a transport for Kim again... 1 hound and 5 bassets (bassets are going to Qc so I have to give them a quick French immersion course!!! lol). I know the regular transport coordinator is also planning a "huge" transport because 6 dogs got left behind on Saturday due to snowstorm in KY. So they and the ones planned already are supposed to come... but I help Kim first! :)

The only books left are:
"Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul"
"Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul"

My apologies that I haven't sent emails yet.. been a bit chaotic around here... plus we do have some time and I won't have concrete plans until we get closer to that weekend.

If anyone is interested in a get together either the weekend of Feb 13 or the following one Feb 20 is fine by me, I'll be in KW both those weekends... I know a couple people have emailed with a preference for the 2nd weekend.... any thoughts?

Jazz, that would be great if we could meet up in the North Waterloo / St. Jacobs area! :)

Sorry GP for high jacking your thread!!

The dogs come from high kill shelters in the US (mostly OH, KY and sometimes GA). They have been assessed by the shelter workers and posted on PetFinder. The Canadian rescues (and Cambridge and London Humane Societies also participate) decide which dogs they want to bring in and then a transport coordinator (almost a full time job) organizes a transport. Each driver does about 100 km leg and passes the dogs on to the next driver. If you look on line under Dog rescue transport groups or something like that, you will be amazed at the number of rescue dogs criss-crossing the States and Canada every weekend. There is even a non profit group Pilots and Paws who fly the dogs! The dogs are vetted before getting on the transport. They are heart worm tested and if positive, they undergo treatment in the States before they come up (much cheaper). Sometimes they are also neutered before they come up, otherwise the Canadian rescues do it within a week or two of their arrival. They are posted on the rescues website and often already have interest before they arrive. Typically, the rescues keep them with foster families for at least two weeks to thoroughly assess them/vet them, etc.I just love meeting the dogs and following up on them.

My favourites so far have been Clayton (Sept. transport) whose overnight foster in Toronto put an application for immediately. He was adopted after the two weeks assessment. Then, there are the 3 GA dogs. My friend in SC picked up a van load of dogs (15) in a shelter in GA and transported them to Cincinnati OH where another friend had connections with a rescue. The 3 Canada bound dogs continued on to Ottawa. My very favourite, Otis, has been adopted. Midas is such a love, the rescue is "keeping him hidden" still (he is her teddy bear at the end of the day and she is very picky about who will adopt him). Lucy, a Great Pyr, is in foster, but will need surgery on a never fixed elbow (probably amputation). She is a love! I "work" mostly with Friendly Giants Dog Rescue (http://www.friendlygiantsdogrescue.ca/) and Catahoula Dog Rescue (http://www.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?shelterid=ON270&preview=1). I have transported Reeba, Sonny and Cher for CR).. The Cambridge HS also takes in some of these dogs and they do a tremendous job! I just got an email from them today that Bo (on an October transport) had finally found a home. Believe me, Cambridge went above and beyond for that dog.. many would have put him down. Their requirements for a home were hilarious, but so true. I was so happy they contacted me to let me know because I had been following up on him too.

This coming weekend I am doing a London to Cambridge HS transport (I live in Waterloo). I have a Suburban and I can take many dogs (in crates or tethered).

Sorry to be so lengthy about it... but I really enjoy the dogs and how loving they all are, knowing that they are safe...Here is the public link to my transport FB page!

so...how exactly does the process go?
Someone finds a dog in the States they would like to adopt..do an online aplication (or go down there?)..then find a transport group to transport?

You know, I really wish I'd read this thread earlier because I am going to Plantagenet this Friday!
I could have taken a dog or two. Although, now I have a funeral to attend on the way.
Maybe next time I go I could assist?

Noodle - I don't think individuals can adopt a dog from a shelter on line from here. The shelters assess the dogs and post them on Petfinder. The Canadian rescues search PF either by breed or by shelters they can work with (either location or willingness on the part of the shelter to help - They don't all help! and some would rather euthanize than give a chance to the dogs). Friendly Giants helped dogs in GA/KY by sheer luck. They posted on the Canadian Transport message board asking if anyone knew someone who could introduce them to a shelter in GA. A friend of mine had been helping one and I put them in touch. That's how Midas, Otis and Lucy came to Canada. Otherwise, depending on the shelters, the transports are organized by a coordinator or the rescues themselves. The transports I help are put together by a group called Open Arms Dog Rescue. They are posted on the yahoo groups (http://www.openarmspoundrescue.com [www.petfinder.com]) or on the Canadian rescue transport group (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CdnDogRescueTransport

You can register on these groups and you will receive the information regarding the upcoming transports.

Typically, the transports go Chatham - London - Guelph (Cambridge this week because the Humane Society is getting 7 dogs) - Toronto (Weston Road) - Port Hope - Belleville - Kingston - Pembroke - Ottawa (if I recall correctly).. or from Buffalo - St Catharines - Grimsby/Hamilton/ - Brantford to London or Hamilton - Toronto, etc. It is quite a job to organize the transports, make sure there are enough drivers for the number of dogs and monitor each relay. To give you an idea of the passengers this week:

Ivy, female JRT, <20 lbs., UTD, spayed. (Owensboro KY/Daviess Co. to Toronto ON/JRTRO)
Piper, female JRT, <20 lbs., UTD, spayed. (Owensboro KY/Daviess Co. to Toronto ON/JRTRO)
Ro & Duke, small JRTs, UTD, altered. (Owensboro KY/Daviess Co. to Toronto ON/JRTRO) IN OWN CRATE.
Sparky, male JRT, <20 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Stanford KY/Lincoln Co. to Toronto ON/JRTRO foster)
Phoebe, female Rat Terrier, 12 lbs., UTD, spayed. (Murfreesboro TN/temp foster to Kitchener ON/RTRC)
Spencer, male terrier mix, 20 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
Rasco, male ShihTzu, <20 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
3 Boxer mix pups, <10 lbs. each, UTD for age, to be altered by rescue. (Celina OH/Mercer Co. to Ann Arbor MI/Last Day)
Mickey, male JRT, 28 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Stanford KY/temp foster to Toronto ON/JRTRO)
Lee, male Beagle/JRT, 30 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
Angel, female spaniel mix, 25-30 lbs., UTD, spayed. (Kenton OH/Hardin Co. to London ON/Animalert)
Rocky, male Puggle, 29 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
Rambo, male Puggle, 36 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
Kyle, male Beagle, 30 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to London ON/Barks and Meows)
Blackie, female husky/black lab mix, 60 lbs., UTD, to be spayed by rescue. (Celina OH/Mercer Co. to Cambridge ON/CDHS)
Dempsey, male lab mix, 60 lbs., UTD, neutered. (Bowling Green KY/BGWC HS to Cambridge ON/CDHS)

They have always been nice dogs and some, yes, I could have been convinced to bring home with me! In early Jan., I transported a beautiful but skinny one year old Mastiff (he was going to a foster to adopt home in Hamilton). He was adorable and so gentle and calm, a lab and a rat terrier. Once I had 7 dogs...I crate them because I do not need the distraction. Most dogs are very friendly and behave very well during something that must be quite traumatic for them.

Frisco, when you are in Plantagenet, get in touch with Gloria and/or Kim. And if you go to visit, give a big hug to Midas!!
Stonehedge, not sure where you are (around Kingston ?), and you did adopt a GD, right? There is always a need for drivers. When there are more drivers, it is not always the same volunteering! When you get the transport sheets, it seems that the Cdn legs fill up very quickly, but the US ones always fill up at the very last minute (esp. the border crossing).

Transports are usually on weekends. They have needed overnights in Toronto area sometimes too. The last transport and this one are a bit different.as they leave KY early on Sat. and overnight before crossing the border. The final destination is TO on Sunday.

Sorry to go on like that.... I really enjoy doing my little bit and I have met wonderful people (rescuers and transporters).

FI - I will go visit on Saturday for sure. They're on the same road as my parents.
I'd love to help - I visit my mom (and sister who lives right in Ottawa) about every other month.
I'll definitely give Midas a big hug :D
I'm looking forward to meeting him!

I told Kim someone may come by to visit... I don't even know your first name! lol... I think we met once, years ago, at a Tim Horton's on Hwy 6, north of 401. You gave me a trunk full of leather halters, etc. for a horse rescue...
I just got an email that this weekend transport from KY to TO is being postponed because of bad weather coming to KY. It is a repeat of last week when the KY dogs could not make it to OH.... poor guys, they have to wait again.. They are still moving some dogs, but only two to Cambridge and Toronto... so they don't need my gas guzzler!!!
Maybe phone to make sure someone is home. Kim's number is 613-852-1902 and Gloria's 613-673-8808

FI - that's too bad that the transport was canceled. Hopefully the weather will be better for next weekend!
I remember meeting up with someone to donate some halters and other bits and bobs, mostly from my boyfriend who is always happy to clean out unused articles, lol. Small world! I believe you and your daughter were going to the rescue to drop the donations off and also to help catch some of the horses that need to have halters put on, correct?
I'm going to call over later this morning and see if it's ok if I stop in on my way back to Ottawa (going to visit my sister and her family).
What a heartwarming story about Chase. It's amazing what can be accomplished with a network of caring people like the 'dog network'!
