Got an email from a dear friend this afternoon.... one of her son's Draft's ( a SUffolk Punch) was hit by a car last night after an incident involving some wolves... I will copy and paste her email for you:
last night, Quinton was at the barn, just started putting the horses in and had a couple in, he had heard the wolves down in the Cedar bush !! all of a sudden in the dark the rest of the herd went nuts !!! and some bolted and ran at full tilt towards the north and Quinton seen the Mamma Pony was spinning in cirles and her foal was gone, he grabbed by Jenn by the haulter, jumped on her and took off after them, Jimmy and Thunder were in the lead and busted thru the north gates and swung out towards the road and broke thru onto the road, Quinton riding thru the dark heard screeching tires and a thud !! by the time he got out to the road, vehicles were stopped with 4 ways on and Thunder had been hid and was in terrible condition.. The witness's that seen the horse blast thru the fence to the road said that they ran up onto the road with 5- 7 wolves on their heel's....
the wolves seen the lights and carried on across and into the long swamp, but the horses and baby pony were freaked out and down in the roadside, they all pulled over and hit their 4 ways, but a car come over the hill at the log house and all said it was flying about 120, one truck flashed their lights at him , but him kept coming anyways, Thunder stepped up out of the ditch and the car hit him at his front left should and chest, trhu him at 2,000 lbs up and over the car, the car was demolished, roof ripped right off it, both husband and wife were un injured ( Thank God) only some skinned knuckles from the air bags, but car is a right off, Thunder got up, by then Quit made it to the road on Jenna and a man lead Jenn down the road for him as he helped walk Thunder home.. There have been absolutly no charges to us in any way ( act of God they called it and too many witness's that seen the wolves on the horses trying to get baby pony.. but the driver ignored flashing lights and was speeding, so dont know what will happen with them..
Thunder was in the worse condition of any horse I have ever seen that was still alive, it took his entire left shoulder and stripped it down to the shoulder joint and bone and it was laying in a flap down his leg, the impact split his chest wide open from his throat to in between his legs, and you head was smashed and cut badly, but he walked calm all the way home. We called the emergency Vet , they got her by 9, she was surprised to find him still alive and not in shock in any way, asked Quinton what he wanted to do, they decided to try and sew him up, that horse stood for 6 hours of 9 rolls of stitches ( 4 layers) draining tubs, and the most horrendous pain ever, never did go into shock !! the first hour was flushing and picking out metallic blue paint out of the massive wounds.. no bone chips or broken bones, but his should joint was exposed and you could watch the join ball rolling inside of the cup.. he will survive, Vet said in 24 years, its the most stitching she has had ever had to put into one horse in her career , and he has bones of iron wood tree's... Today he is not moving much, but eating and drinking and seems to be comforted by Quintons voice, he's in an incredible amount of pain , but under shots to help with that, antibiotics, and Vet expects because he survived the blood lose, shock, ect. he will make it, and all the muscle, tendons and nerves will heal.. Vet left at 4 AM... and get this.. felt so bad for Quinton , and said he was such a great assistant to her, its was an 1,800.00 call, she billed him 500.00 !!! which covered her med's and call only. He looks unbelievable and like he shouldnt be alive... Keeping our fingers crossed, and needing some sleep !!!! and Baby pony was saved by Uncle Jimmy and Thunder !!!!
THe long and short of it folks is THunder needs some jingles....
Thanks so much,
Stoney.

I sent your friend a message on facebook along with Jingles from my horses and my family. I hope the big guy makes it after all hes been through.Keep us informed please.
February 4, 2010 01:57AM
OMG, that poor horse! It must hurt like he!! and drafts are so stoic. Loud loud jingles for Thunder. I truly hope he makes it!!! So "glad" there were witnesses to the wolf attack so they don't get charged on top of the stress of dealing with such an injury!! People are really stupid and think they own the road. Sheesh, flashing lights, cars stopped... nope, does not apply to me!!! argh...
Hope the horse recovers (is it a Belgian?) and that your friends are ok.
February 4, 2010 07:35AM
He's very lucky not to have broken bones!! He's going to be sore for a while.
February 4, 2010 07:55AM
Jingling like crazy for dear, sweet, brave, Thunder. He sounds like one darling, tough guy. Also very releived that the people were not killed....what a nightmare for everyone. Stay strong and brave Thunder. He's obviously in the hands of people that really love him
February 4, 2010 08:56AM
Wow! That's a lot of stitching. Poor Thunder! Jingling for Thunder and his owner. Sending good healing thoughts!

Thunder is a Suffolk Punch..... he is a fabulous guy and well loved ... his owner is an 18 year old young man who is planning on building eco friendly post and bean homes and Thunder was part of the team for drawing the logs .... the team was used during an apprenticeship last summer. Very cool stuff and this kid has a great head on his shoulders.... I heart just aches for him..... he slept in the barn last night he said that his voice helps to keep Thunder calm.
February 4, 2010 12:10PM
Tons of jingles for poor brave Thunder and <<hugs>> for Quinton
February 4, 2010 12:20PM
Yes, I should have read a bit closely. It did say Suffolk Punch... duh...
I hope things are fine this morning for Thunder and his owner... what a nightmare! Where do they live that the pack would have been wolves and not coyotes?
Still jingling!
February 4, 2010 01:22PM
Coyotes don't normally hunt in packs - so will not generally both horses.
I'd be interested to know where too... scary. Jingles from me and my crew for Thunder.
February 4, 2010 03:07PM
Thunder is 1 amazing guy to have made it through...good ambassador for the breed I'd say!!!...he's (and his young owner) are in my thoughts...if they've made it this far, the rest should be a piece of cake!!!!...just lots of rest and DRUGS!!!!
February 4, 2010 03:40PM
Coyotes and wolves can hunt in packs, depending of the size of the prey apparently.
"Coyotes have flexible social behaviour and adjust their hunting methods to the prey size and food sources available. Coyotes often hunt small prey animals singly, whereas they hunt large prey and defend large carcasses in groups." They may very well have been wolves, however a location would be interesting... Ontario? Algonquin Park area?
February 4, 2010 04:46PM
Absolutely JINGLES for Thunder and kudos to everyone for pulling for him.
February 4, 2010 05:25PM
Stoney,
I haven't got the guts to look at the pictures, but every prayer, every jingle I have goes out to Thunder and his owner.
The courage of that animal, is unbelievable.

I have been unfortunate enough to have been chased by coyotes (although I think they were CoyDogs). Once was on foot in Rockwood behind a friends farm around dinner time. Three of us were walking and laughing with a friends 2 dogs. We walked into on open field and notice a group of about 6 "dogs" gathered around a round bale. They saw us, we saw them, they ran at us...us 3 girls booted it back to he barn where her dad scared them away. The second time was on horseback. The mother must have had a den nearby, because we crossed a dries out riverbed a million times and never had a problem until this one day, this very dark colored dog came out from under some scrub and went right at my horses rear legs. It was terrifying.
We have also has several run ins with them on our farm in Caledonia. They are brave when they are hunting, and seem to take stupid risks. I believe that when crossed with domestic dogs, they are that much more comfortable around people and livestock.
Here in Guelph we are having a large problem at the south end with coyotes killing cats and dogs right in peoples back yards. A 3 legged coyote has started hunting dogs at the Hanlon Dog Park.
The police have shot this coyote, but were unable to kill it.
I cant imagine how terrifying it must have been to watch a pack hunting the foal, and how terrified and frenzied the group must have been trying to get away. I am glad that everything turned out "alright" this time. Im sure though, that they will return to try again. Coyotes are just like that.
February 4, 2010 08:48PM
Thanks to all of you .... I just knew I could count on all of you for your compassion and your good thoughts.... This farm is located NOrth of Madoc.... and they were wolves and not coyotes.. the area is well known for them.
I will keep you all up to date on Thunder....
Thanks again,
Stoney.

Hello Everyone , it's Thunder the Warrior's owner here, and have to say that we're overwhelmed with all of the incredible warm wish's , jingles and prayer's for Thunder, he's most deserving of them all and its so much appreciated by all of us here at Crazy Acres Ranch, its a great comfort to know that complete strangers and lovers of the beast are praying for him too.. I'll try and answer some of your questions as well.. We arent far from Algonquin Area at all, just south of Bancroft Ont. Our enitre area has been having a nightmare time with what the Ministry and OPP are calling " Eastern Hybred Wolves" in just the last month, all of the surrounding townships to us have introduced a" wolf bounty", as the deer population has been severly effected and dropped almost 50 %, domestic dogs and cats have been killed in their yards, and many, many livestock attack's. But for us here it hasnt passed yet as there has been a great turn out at Township meetings in past weeks of the " Save the Wolves Club" !!!!
The wolves we have been seeing here at our horse farm are nothing short of HUGE, and look exactly like a full Wolf, have taken Quinton's chickens in broad daylight with human's standing in the barnyard and ran thru horses to do it, Quinton actually ran after it to no avale. This pack was according to the witness's about 5-7 on the horses heels, and as the horses hit the road , the pulled over lights that in a full moon seen a stampede of horses heading directly for a gateway at the highway, the horses came to a dancing stop on the hardtop, they said it was a scene from a horror film as the wolves passed over the road, thru the horses like ghosts and continued on in to the darkness of a long swamp. By the time Quinton caught up to them on Jenna , Thunder had been hit and was laying in the ditch. when he stepped down to help Thunder, Jenna buckled her knee's under and attempted to lay with him, but Quinton jerked her up , he was affraid if she gave him comfort on the ground, he wouldnt fight to get up, an unknown but kind man stepped in and took Jenna from Quinton and Thunder stood up for him, together they led them down the highway and to home and up to the barn, the rest that were on the road, had already made their way home and were at the barn gates.
Thunder is holding his own, I think today at 72 hours is what I would say his worst day, swelling is at a Max, he's clearly in a tremendous amount of pain, but he's honest, generous and kind, and allow's Quint to do all of the cleansing and flushing without even as much as a head toss, he somehow knows that he need's Quintons hand right now , his biggest fans Uncle Jimmy ( partner in harness ) Jenna and Miss Kitt are keeping vigale outside of his door , and baby pony has gone about her busy little life of chaos and bratty behaviour with the remaining 18 of the herd !!!! Im sure totally un aware of what Thunder, Uncle Jimmy and the others did to insure her survival in this herd, I think her little shetland blind in one eye Mommy is Thankful though !!!!!
And as for Quinton, well he looks like he's been thru WW3, a nice big shiner and goose egg on his temple from something that hit him on a flat out run in the dark in a thick bush trail, his legs are so so stiff he can hardly walk from hanging on bareback for so long and so fast, has an in general worried sick look at all times when Thunders name is mentioned, but is so Thankful he survived and is still standing in the barn, Thunder is only turning 7 years old and Quint is looking forward to a long life with him yet !!!!! This horse for some reason is meant to survive, at 2 years old , he was left on a meat buyers truck in a parking lot and when they found him he was nearly dead of starvation and dehydration, severely under weight, he went into the auction for meat and folks there bid him up and took him to a wonderful Horse rescue, after a year he was good enough to go, went to a home where he was taken care of, but not untilized in anyway and standing in a small 1 acre or so paddock for a while, returned to the Rescue due to family problems, then the same woman took him back again !!! and then again not being in a positon to cope with a work horse, gave him to Quinton, once here, we had some concerns with him as he had never lived in such a big natural herd enviroment, and had to learn to dynamics of a natural nomadic herd and its responsibilites to one and another. All the while learning to be a partner to Uncle Jimmy ans Quinton. Well !! lets say he got it, because he has turned out to be an incredibly good horse and kind freind to all, he's loved dearly.
Again ..Thanks for all the Jingles and well wishs, I will try and post some pics of the Big Guy and his Boy for all of you and keep you posted with all the new's.. Hugs from everyone !!!
February 5, 2010 11:37PM
Thank you for such a wonderful and welcome update!! I was holding my breath for Thunder, waiting to hear how he was doing. What a trooper and what a touching story about Jenna wanting to comfort Thunder after his horrific accident. Actually there were several touching stories there...brought a tear or two for sure - Thunder is a survivor - no question.
Continued good thoughts coming your way as you work through this (hope Thunder's pain and Quinton's subsides soon) - and good luck with the wolves - what a worry!!
February 5, 2010 11:47PM
Thank you for letting us know how everyone is doing. Ive found myself thinking alot about this nightmare lately.I truly hope that Thunder makes it through this ordeal, and has only a few scars as a memory.I cant believe Quinton jumped on bareback with only a halter and set chase!
Honestly, it really seems like a scene from a blockbuster. Anyways, we'll keep the good thoughts flowing in your direction!!
February 6, 2010 12:19AM
I know Coldwetnoses, after the shock of everything that night and we all got a couple of hours of sleep, I said to Quinton how foolish it was to chase after them on Jenna, in the dark, bareback and halter, thick harwood bush, and went the length of our front peice of 150 acres, he could have been killed himself, fell off and the wolves turn back and get him unconcious on the ground or something. He told me that once he jumped on Jenna " which she is very used of with Quinton as they win the bareback pick-up man race everytime barrel racing " that she ran right after them and once he hit into the heavy bush he just laid on her neck, tucked his dead down and closed his eye's, she found her way on a run thru and out the other side, and says he didnt feel anything hit his face at all, never noticed it until I seen him in the barn lights, I'm sure him and Jenna were both running on straight adrenelin with one goal, to catch up, sadly they just didnt make it in time..
February 6, 2010 12:49AM
oh my... still jingling loud and clear for Thunder and Quinton. What a pair these two make!!! I really hope that Thunder will get stronger and better. At least, he is standing, eating and drinking... what a lovely story about your herd, looking out for each other.. I hope these wolves will move on. How are you managing right now though? Is the pony in the barn? You sure don't want another stampede any time soon... oh the nightmares!!! What breed is Jenna? I am still thinking very positive thoughts for all of you, esp. Thunder and Quinton.
February 6, 2010 01:07AM
Oh Yes FI, they all go in at night here, and thats what Quintons was at the barn doing, had lead the first few in and stepped back out as they all line up to stable in and get all their night feed goodies, it was when he stepped out that this crazy running around started, it only took a few seconds for him to see Mamma Pony running and squealing with her head up, all the horses aggitated and darting back and forth, then that her baby was not in the mix, like he said a quick as it all pooped into his mind, the horses began a big running loop he described like a school of fish moving in a cluster and bolted straight into the darkness and to the North of the farm. We realize now, that the wolves where in the relatively close tree line to the back of the barn in the darkness, and had got the baby separated from her Mom while Quint was in hooking horses in their stall's, Jimmy and Thunder somehow got babes sandwiched and they bolted with her as a handful of the other more dominate in the herd followed in, Quinton caught Jenna as she went to pass by him... Jenna is my mare, but Quinton uses her to Barrel race and win 3 Championship Belt Buckles in the past 2 years, and my 16 daughter uses her when she wants a guaranteed Cross Country Eventing Win, shes a 8 year old Canadian ??? Cross, I actually bought her from Stoney 3 years ago this March, Stoney follows this horses life very closely and the folks that ride her.. I call her Jenna the " WONDER HORSE" the kids call her, Miss Fatty fat , LOLOLO Lovingly !!! Stoney owns Jenna's Daughter.
February 6, 2010 09:04AM
So glad to hear that Thunder's hanging in there. He really is a warrior! And Jenna is definitely a wonder horse! How amazing.
Your family has been through so much - I'm thinking good thoughts and jingling like crazy for you all.

Morning Folk's
Thunder was just out side this morning for the first time since his accident, was mighty glad to see the sunlight and his herd, he has been able to hear them thru his door, but has had no contact touch with them, they met him half way to a round bale and he ate with them for a few minutes, he's walking very slow and purposful baby steps, swelling is looking like it's going down slighty , drainage is looking good, running translucant orangish, nothing cloudy, stitches are tight.. there is less swelling on his head and eye is open, he was out with Quinton for about 20 minutes and back in, but a good sign none the less, his pain meds seem to be keeping his pain at a tolerable level for him, and antibiotics are clearly working. Sure the Vet will see a huge improvement on her follow up Monday. Even after all these years of horses , my whole life really, it still amazes me how in tune to one and another they are, how they smell an injury to their herd mate with such gentle touch, and even a couple of the Bale Bully horses that will allow them in with room to spare, and how quickly Uncle Jimmy moves in on his bad side to keep it protected, they are wonderous creatures...
February 6, 2010 04:47PM
Wonderful news. And again, the herd is being so good to watch out for him. Hope Quinton's injuries heal as well as Thunder's.
February 6, 2010 09:25PM
This is like a Disney story! Let's hope the healing increases and the pain decreases for all involved.
Thank-you for the awe-inspiring update. I said a prayer for the hero warrior, as I walked down to the barn tonight.
I'd like to spare a thought for the driver of the vehicle. I hope something positive comes out of this for him/her. I wonder if they have ANY idea of the scope of the story? I'm not warmly disposed toward 'people' in general, but one hopes for an epiphany! I've heard it happens.

February 6, 2010 10:18PM
I hear ya SH, I have hoped for an Epiphany with this fella as well , and all though I am sooooo releived that him nor his passanger wife were harmed, thier car can be easily replaced in a day, thier health and lives couldnt be, the fact that the only thing he could think to say to Quinton as Quint jumped off Jenna at thier car, they were already out and standing on the road looking at thier car, and Quinton asked if they were Okay, did they need an ambulance ?? was... "are these your horses ?? Quinton said yes, he said.. " well your in F&%$#*&G big trouble Mister !!! This car is only 1 year old, you best have good insurance !!!! I'm not holding my breath that he has felt any remorse for the horse that laid in the ditch or the young man tear stained trying to get him up ... I hit a hunting hound once, it came up out of the ditch so fast I never seen it until it was right at my front passanger tire, it was the most sickning sound ever, and it was still alive, a family stopped and the fella helped me get him into the back of my car , tied a sock around his mouth to stop his snapping at us, and into the closest Vet office, he died within minutes of getting there, but I still never slept a good night for weeks, and didnt realize the 400.00 damage to my car until the next day !!! Ive never drove quite that fast down a dark whindy back road again. Im not holding my breath for this guy !!!

Beautiful horse and so kind!
The fact that really gets to me is the driver either never saw the flashing headlights and people waving - so, he was not paying attention to his driving and road conditions. Or he did see them and ignored them ... what if it had been a person that was in the middle of the road, hurt? Would he have said to someone, is that your wife, husband? you better have insurance... my gosh.. I hope he gets nailed for unsafe driving.. Luckily, you have many witnesses regarding the wolves!
Still jingling for Thunder and Quinton.
I just showed the first set of pictures to my daughter and she is amazed that no bone was broken and that Thunder never went in shock and continued to eat and drink. I am sorry he will be stiff for a while though.
February 7, 2010 11:23AM
I know, as we waiting what seemed an enternity at the barn for the Vet to arrive, I was certain he would go back down to the ground with shock and the blood lose was nothing short or mortifying, but amazingly when she got here, he was not in shock !!!! and as her and Quinton pick thru all of that open and hanging tissue and got paint chips, she was also looking for bone chips or fractures, there were none, it was then that she said he had bones like an iron wood tree. She listened very carefully for any disruption in his organs, nothing !!! his urine ran clear of blood, and she told Quinton if they could keep him up and repair this he had a great chance of survival, as she said, he's a fighter and still here, he'll fight for a recovery as well.
So as of about an hour ago, Thunder was back outside again for a fresh air tuddle, did not go far, just to meet his pals about 30 ft from his door, but has pressure on all 4's on the ground... bowels, water and his appetite are still all good, tubes are still showing draining, and he takes his needles like a champ.. He is an absolute nut for bread, of any kind, Quinton always gave him, frozen pure apple juice drinking boxs when they work together and some of his sandwich's when they were working in the the building program and slips him Timbits woking in the bush, so he has been putting Thunders granular antibiotics in moist Malt bread to make it go do easier, and a couple frozen juice boxs a day too.
, he cuts the top off and slips it up, Thunder eats it like a popsicle, good for electrolytes and something to look forward too in the day.
He'll go back out again this after noon , not long, but enough to stretch him out and help with his stiffning. I'll get some pics today..
February 7, 2010 11:36AM
It's terrific to hear that Thunder is doing so well. I hope he continues to improve, and is soon able to be with his friends and enjoy being a horse again. Neat idea about the drinking boxes. Best wishes!
February 7, 2010 11:52AM
So good to hear the continued progress! I signed on to Facebook for the very first time (I'm a dinosaur) to see his pics - what a horrendous injury!
I laughed when I read about the frozen drinking boxes - when I chip out the frozen balls from my mares' feet - she wants to sniff it, and when offered she munches on it like a popsicle too. If she EVER finds out that frozen apple juice is an option instead of her usual manure/ice blend - I'm in big trouble!!
Thanks so much for keeping us updated...and keep up the great work!
February 7, 2010 12:42PM
Simple little trick the drinking box's, started doing it a few years ago, I buy them by the case, for my younger kids lunches, and then put half of them in the freezer, we always toss a few in cooler during barrel racing season to have with us at the shows, its cooling and good for them on a hot running day, also keep them on hand for other memebers of our barrel club if they have a horse maybe showing some signs of weakness and nned a boost. But Quinton puts them in his lunch cooler everyday for Jimmy and Thunder, nice cool break in the day for them..
February 8, 2010 01:25PM
Not as great a morning this morning for Thunder, overnight his draining has turned cloudy, we were keeping our fingers crossed for continued clearish flow, Vet is here today for follow up , so good timing to jump in if something has to be changed , maybe an increase in his antibiotics or its strength.. He's out for fresh air this morning and seem's to moving fine and no signs of fever, appetite is still good. Keeping our fingers crossed..
February 8, 2010 01:46PM
Jingling even louder for Thunder. Hope the vet can reassure you and give him stronger antibiotics if he needs them. Keep us posted!

February 8, 2010 10:08PM
Still jingling here.... Jingles from the whole gang ...really really loud Jingles.
February 8, 2010 11:06PM
Hey Folk's.. Vet's news was encouraging, yes there has been some infection set in , in the very top of that open shoulder and he felt the draining tube wasnt being as effective as it could be where the top is concerned, so he actually took his 2 fingers and peeled open the top 2 stitchs around the tube, VERY VERY NASTY, but immediatly it ran infection and he rolled his hand hard along the entire injury and squeezed it out !!! did a re -cleaning and left those stitchs out to help in the draining, he has uped his antibiotics by half again, but on the good side of things, all the re-attached flesh is alive, with good circulation !!! and get this !!!! he asked if we had acsess to fresh Honey, which we do with the home place still being producers, he said to stop coating the open portion of the wound with the jelly left here and begin cooating with a generous layer of HONEY !! twice daily, said that it is a very effective healing tool and infection fighter for this kind of open wound.. Didnt argue in any way.
Just an extra note folks, I know this reachs far and wide from our home here, but if ever you are in need of some serious care for any horse, These Vets at The Campbellford Clinic Ontairo are unbeleivable , not only are the some of the finest Ive seen, they are awesome human's !! and by that I mean, they not only care for the animals they see, but today again, it was the Owner of the clinic itself named Bruce that did the follow up as Cathy was gone for a much needed holiday, he came in here, we again have never met any of these vets before, all new to us, and after going over Thunder with a fine tooth comb, really got talking to Quinton about Draft Horses and the work he does with them, his love of them, his busy, busy life here on top of his schooling program in building, and all the things that this 18 year old boy has accomplished, he told Quinton that he would be very interested in , instead of payment for the follow-up call today, " remember they billed him less than half for the intial night of the accident, knowing Quinton was paying for his horse" would Quinton like to come do some work with him with the Draft Horse calls, and as well assist him in doing some logging by horse on a new property he has bought very close to us here, he said to Quinton, I'll show you some things about the Draft Horse Body, and you can teach me some things about how they work !!! How Wonderful is That .. It makes me proud to know that people see the incredible boy before them that I and many of this farm community see, and that kids with great character, hard work ethic, and honest hearts arent invisible today to the trained eye .. Kudos to the Campbellford Animal Clinic and all its staff. Screaming the praise of the Campbellford Vet team !!!!
February 8, 2010 11:13PM
Ohhhh what great News.... Quinton of course I know is pleased and yes he is a great kid to the core .... I would be proud to call him my own. Still Jingling.

Hey Stoney , long time no see.. LOLOLO, wasn;t it about this time last night , but we are so thrilled for Quinton, what a cool thing to happen, and of course you know him well enough too, he took it all is quiet nodding, very low key and humble, but does a little skip on his own the barn hill !!! If I send you some home pics , can you get them out for me ??
February 8, 2010 11:47PM
wow... you can be so proud of your son and his horse... what a nice vet. This so comforting to see how wonderful some vets can be. James Herriot anyone? It will be wonderful for Quinton to shadow this vet and work with him on the logging project. There is always a silver lining. Now Thunder, keep up your end of the bargain!! Get well boy!

THANK-YOU!! What a fabulous on-going story of healing, hope, and of how out of something so bleak, comes something good.
Everytime I hear the 'good' part of humans it chips away at the disgust I generally feel for my species.
Way to go Everyone!! Bring on the honey!!!
Keep us in the loop and give your kid a hug from us(be discreet

Wonderful and heartwarming news What a wonderful Vet you have found. I happen to be as blessed to know and be friends with a couple as generous and giving and know just how lucky we are. Continued Jingles for Thunder - What a gem

I've been following this thread and have my fingers crossed tightly for everyone involved! The neat story that has developed is definitely the silver lining!
As Rachel said, I am also lucky to be friends with a most amazing vet who goes above and beyond and also work with a team of wonderful vets - I consider myself very fortunate.
Thinking of Quinton and Thunder!
February 9, 2010 03:41PM
I will be certainly be following the Honey Healing, never heard of anything like it before, even with my late
Father-in-Law being a Bee Keeper and Honey producer, then my husband and his sister taking that family tradition over, we use it in every recipe you could imagine, have taught the kids for fun to make bee's wax candles and fun gifts for family occassion's, neices and nephew's like to do little wax projects, but never used as a healing tool for injuries !!!!! Thunder got his first smeering of it this morning, my only concern was that the herd would pick at it,,,, AGAIN, Vet was right, they havent seemed to bother it on him today, he's been out most of the afternoon, close by and they arent touching it..
It just occured to me today, that it is a week ago tonight , that Thunder was hit, and what a week in time can do, only a week ago I seen him standing here in the porch light with Quinton , and I was silently sure he'd never survive the wait for the Vet, that either the shock or blood loss would kill him any minute, and wondering what we were going to do for Quinton if he did drop to the ground , and as I type this, he is standing with his 5 fav's in the barnyard, eating from a round bale, with all 4 knee's locked and standing completely still, while that bratty little baby pony is running around , flinging a green haulter around in her mouth, I think it might be her Mom's " little thief "
February 9, 2010 04:25PM
Glad to hear Thunder is out with his friends. I am sure that helps too. If this had to happen, it is a good thing it was int he wintertime. No problem with bugs, bees, etc. I don't want to imagine how much harder it would be to keep the wound clean and bug free in the summer.
Jingling still!!
February 9, 2010 07:37PM
Wonderful news that Thunder is improving so well!
Quinton sounds like such an upstanding young man. He has a very bright future ahead of him!
Its obvious that others sense his honesty and goodnes as evidenced by such positive feedback from your wonderful vets.
I am thinking of you all and sending healing jingles out to Thunder!
February 9, 2010 08:31PM
i would like to make this into a movie of the week. Really, this could be a winner! I love the honey idea, my dad knows of people who use Jam, but said honey is better (something about the high sugar content)! Hopefully I will never have cause to try it myself.
Your vet certainly sound like they are wonderful and caring for both animals, and the often forgotten humans. Its nice to know that just sometimes its a little more about healing and a little less about the money.
My brother is a forester in NB, and going to start hauling logs with horses! Perhaps I should recommend a Suffolk Punch. They sound like an extraordinary breed..or Perhaps Thunder is one of a kind!

I think it is the same idea as sugar and iodine for treating thrush. The sugar prevents bacteria from multiplying, etc. Funny, I had heard about it, but never thought of it again. As I said though, lucky this is winter time...
February 9, 2010 09:19PM
Apparently, another very efficient wound treatment trick is to use "amnion". Breeders are catching on and cleaning and cutting strips of amnion, freezing it to use at a later date in case of a deep wound. There is a method to preparing it and I have read many comments (Coth) about its value and the positive results.
February 10, 2010 12:31AM
"Amnion" what is this? Like Amnio as in after having a baby? Im so lost..yet very interested!
February 10, 2010 01:05AM
We're really keeping our fingers crossed on this Honey, talked to an ole horse Fella today, who used to haul horse many moon's ago with my Grandfather from outwest to Ontario, that told me the Honey is healing because of the SPORES !!! and that they breed a bacteria that although can be harmful ingested by babies if not pasterized, in open wounds this bacteria battles infections ??? Keep in mind, he and my Grampy also used to mix their disgusting PRE-CHEWED tobacco with boiled down plantain leaf from the backyard to put on scalds, wounds and absess's on our Drafts growing up !!!! I have no idea what their scientific explaination on that one was LOLOLO.
I knew nothing of the Sulfolk Punch Draft Horse either , until Quinton was offered Thunder, did some quick research before he arrived and certainly liked what I seen, and since getting him here, any of the Good Ole horseman that I know, have done nothing but sing their praises, and all seemed to have an interesting tale of one they knew of at some time or another. By nature of Breed, they are notorious for being the Working Man's Draft, described as a family working horse, works the field's by day, carries the children to school, and haul's the family to church on Sundays. Very passive and agreeable natures, not prone to agressive or high strung behaviour, and incredible hearts and will to work !!! Well in a nut shell, that's Thunder to a ( T ). He is an amazing logging horse and when Quinton is finished at the end of the day, Quint will throw his younger brother who is 9 up on his back and let him ride Thunder back to the barn still in harness and the lines tied up on his back. Quinton rides him on all trail rides, there just isnt anything you cant show him that he does and does well, he has a very old man's soul for such a young horse, I'm told typical of the breed. Just his conduct the night of the accident, and the fact that he never slipped into shock, showed me his strength of character and level mind. I would highly recommend the Sulfolk to anyone wanting to log or work the land by horse " plus they are shorter to throw the harness up on " LOLO

Amnion is collected at time of foaling.
Here are the instructions about preserving amnion.
The original article this was taken from was in Equus magazine in July 1998. It originally came from Auburn University; I will post both Auburn's lab method and then the kitchen method for those of you to do it at home. I want to preface this by saying that I'm not a veterinarian, so before you use amnion on your horses, you should check with a vet to make sure it is appropriate for your horse/situation. Another thing I want to clarify is that you should use only a "fresh" amnion; preferably from an attended foaling so that you can grab it as soon as it hits the ground. You don't want to use something that has been ground into the stall or pasture for hours before being found. You also only want to use a placenta that is clinically normal, and obviously not one from a mare infected from placentitis. I also want to clarify that the amnion is the white membrane from foaling; not the thick reddish "placenta". Often you will have to peel the white amnion from the placenta, depending upon the situation.
Auburn's lab method:
1. Flush the amnion with copious amounts of tap water. Remove any ground in dirt.
2. Place the cleaned amnion in a one-gallon plastic container, cover with a 2 percent povidone iodine saline solution and refrigerate 24 hours.
3. After 24 hours, spread the amnion on a sterile drape, and cut into segments *5x10 cm in size. * You can cut any size that you need, actually.
4. Rinse the pieces sequentially in four sterile baths, the first three with physiological saline, the final bath with 0.25 percent acetic acid.
5. Place dressings into sterile specimen cups containing 0.25 percent acetic acid and freeze.
*This is the method that we use and it works great. It has been recommended to me that ideally you would dispose of the amnion after a year, and replace with fresh. However, I have used amnion up to 3 years old and it has been fine.
Look for posts by Dutch on this thread. She has posted pictures. [ www.chronofhorse.com]
I don't know if it would have helped Thunder because of the location of his wounds. It would have been very difficult to hold the bandage on a shoulder. Most injuries treated that way were on legs.
Still jingling for Thunder.
The Kitchen Method
1. Same
2. Mix 250 ml of a stock 10% povidone iodine solution (Solution NOT Scrub) with one liter saline solution to make a 2% mixture. You can get these from a vet or pharmacy.
3. Spread the amnion on a towel washed in antibacterial soap and a splash of bleach. Using scissors soaked in alcohol and a pair of sterile gloves, cut into segments.
4. You can use Tupperware, cool whip containers, etc. washed and rinsed in boiling water for your sterile baths. The first three in physiological saline, the last in 5 percent acetic acid. The acetic acid is plain old white vinegar (not apple cider). White vinegar is 5% acetic acid, so dilute with 20 parts water to one part vinegar.
5. Sterilized baby food jars make a good substitute for specimen cups. Place the dressings into containers with 0.25 percent acetic acid and freeze.
Some tips: It is easier to cut around any large vessels in the amnion, rather than through them. You can cut the dressings to any size that you prefer. This is a messy, rather nasty job and if your spouse/significant other is home, I wouldn't do it on the kitchen table !
There have been many posts on Coth explaining how effective this method has been. If
February 10, 2010 09:41AM
That is amazing !!! Ive copied the recipe down and forwarded it to many friend's..
Many times here and at Home over the years, we used the placenta to bring a mare that wasn't cycling , into heat within 24 hours , and Ive seen that work time and time again and have many offspring from doing it , from mares that the race-barn's deemed infertile and of no use to them , after several attempt's with hormone shots ect ect , they landed here rather then the auction floor and have had many foal's from those mares with the ole" Placenta trick "Grampy used, but never heard of it as healing product, I love coming across this type of info..Thanks !!!

WoW, that is something !!!
I have 5 foals due this Spring and will certainly be preparing some of this, I normally pick a placenta up and freeze it m but for the infertile mare thing, but with a herd this size, any one these things that you can do and prepare yourself for cant hurt, modern Vetting is a blessing, and I'm Thankful we have it on nights when you have Thunder standing in horrible condition in front of you, if we could just blend together all the old treatments that are slowly being forgotten with the new, it would be perfect.
February 10, 2010 12:47PM
I have never heard of the placenta trick. I don't breed, but just for kicks, what is it supposed to do? How do you use it?
February 10, 2010 01:22PM
Again, it's one of those things that the Good Ole Boy's did in the day when they had a mare for some reason that wouldn't cycle, Im not sure of exactly what the true science explaination would be ? A lot of mares off the track, have long time passed without cycling, and if they've been a successful horse on the track, they are pushed past a normal retirement date which ususally means they have been given Steroids and things that have stopped their Ovaries from working ect. ect. So even though they were of great bloodlines and fast, when retired , if they cant then a least produce new running stock, off for meat they go as they are just a feeding expense in the barn . We always put those mares in with a mare very close to foaling and if at all possible, in the same open pen while the mare actually foaled, then we put that mare in her box stall with the Placenta on her floor, she will paw at it, keep rolling it with her nose, and we leave it in for a few days, and low and behold, you'll walk in , and there she is in a full blown heat, tail up over her back and ready to stand for the Stallion, I've seen it first hand many, many times and have had Wyatt Erpp, Low Go Gone, and Shezza Three Bars from this trick myself never mind the countless born at home as kids. We also take the fresh Placenta and all the bedding attached to it, dont wash it, just fork it up the way it lays on the ground, bag it, freeze it in a pail and lid, and pull it out, and dump all the contents unthawed on the stall floor, fluid , hay ,shavings and all in with a mare, and watch how quickly she'll come into heat ???? I've watched them pee on it, roll it, roll on it, its kinda crazy, but it works.. Grampy always " give that mares Ovaries a kick start " !!!!
February 10, 2010 01:37PM
wow, very interesting. I had never heard of that in all the forums I read... Hope you can save/prepare some amnion. It keeps frozen for many years....
February 10, 2010 01:42PM
If I am not mistaken FI .... You place the placenta with a mare that has been deemed infertile for what ever reason and it will throw her into a heat so she can have a successful breeding..... I had never heard of this but Tammy was telling me all about it .... physiologically speaking bodies are so interesting... must have something to do with the hormones levels and scent.
February 10, 2010 01:51PM
Hey, wouldn't it be interesting for everyone who follows this tread to add a home recipe of their own or that they know of , be some very interesting and useful tips for everyone in the future, so go ahead folk's, I'll start with this one.
Stop horses bleeding quickly !!! Spider Cob Webs !!!
I'm convinced that one of the reasons Thunder didnt die on us right there that night, is that he was bleeding so horribly, and it wasnt stopping at all, barn floor was covered and it was running from a stream to the floor at his chest, I sent the kids and Quinton out to grab skinny strands of Cedar Bow's, they brought them in and I had them sweep all the spider cob webs we could find in the rafters with the bow's, "dont use the broom, it holds too much old dirt in it" and as they gave me them full of webs, Quinton packed the bundles into his open wounds, it stopped it !!! it was another 45 minutes or better before the Vet could get here, When Cathy walked in the barn, she said " he's still standing ? i didnt think he would be with the blood I just followed up your driveway and the yard, she looked at the blood pooled on the floor too !!! She right away checked his vital's and for shock, and then noticed something soaked and packed in his wounds, we told her what it was, she pulled it back and it goes like packed down thready sheets and said she never heard of such a thing , but thank God it worked, and had clotted, then proceded to clean the wounds. I told her, we used to pack a foal's naval with it as well if it was bleeding and too short.
February 10, 2010 02:29PM
Is it like the "dorm effect" for women... somehow women that live together end up cycling at the same time!?
Wow, never heard of the spider webs either. But then, I am kind of new to horses (10 years) and I board... but this is so interesting...
February 10, 2010 02:37PM
The jist I always got about the spider webs, was they packed tighter than any man made material ever could, and that some fliud the spiders spun out with thier web made it water resistant and had a clotting ability !!!
February 10, 2010 03:00PM
I found this .... very interesting who knew ????
Spider webs are rich in vitamin K, which can be effective in clotting blood. Webs were used several hundred years ago as gause pads to stop an injured person's bleeding.
and from another article....
Europeans used spider webs (which are high in vitamin K) as gauze pads because of its blood-clotting and healing abilities. The way in which spiders produce these lifelines is by using spinneret glands (found by the middle or end of the abdomen), which literally squeeze out the fluids as solids.
February 10, 2010 05:10PM
wow, thats pretty cool, who knew the Old Boy's had it exactly right, point for point, just didnt know the exacting science of it all !!!
February 10, 2010 05:40PM
amazing.... I am passing these on to my barn manager... will tell her to stop worrying about the cobwebs!!!

Too Funny, I was just thinking about what a great explaination for my house cob webs that is !!! have a whole little arsenol of them here LOLOL.
February 10, 2010 09:31PM
There's a story from my Dad about an near death accident for him when he was 5 years old, he was playing around in New Brunswick in his family farm and swung down and hit his heel on the Sickle Blade, it nearly took his entire heel off, and it hung by a peice of skin and you could see his heel bone. they carried him to the house and it wouldnt stop bleeding, they tryed everything, even sewing with needle and thread , but bleeding kept pouring thru, this was 1940 and local hospitals or Doctors close by in North Shore New Brunswick remote farming/fishing village werent heard of,, he was drunk from Rum and didnt remember much after a certain point, but the story goes that they sent the other kids into the woods to get my grandfather and when he came out like a " wild man " with the team of horse in harness on a flat out run away, he sent them all to the stable to gather Cob Webs, he cut away the stitching and then packed his heel , over and over in layers of the cob webs, and it stopped bleeding, they said that he lost so much blood, you could see all his veins in his face and he was the color of ashes for 2 weeks. All of my life my Dad had a very sensitive heel to the cold and it would turn pure white with a brownish purple line all around the heel. And he hated RUM, couldnt even stand the smell of Dark Navy Rum !!!!!!!!!!!
February 11, 2010 02:21PM
Yep.. I have used honey to great effects. Fantastic stuff. Cobwebs certainly work, but I am afraid my spider phobia keeps me away from being the "collector". lol!!
The placenta thing is something I had not heard of, very interesting and it does remind me of the "dorm effect" us ladies have on eachother.
Jingles and still thinking of the big guy in his recovery!!!

although I haven't posted I have been following the story and have been sending best wishes - Thunder is a breed I've always admired and hoped someday to meet but didn't know where any were....... as with all precious jewels they are rare, but we're all hoping this big diamond stays twinkling with you much longer....give him a scritch and snuggle for us tonight....

February 11, 2010 11:07PM
Wrap him in cobwebs, slather him in honey, and put some Amnio in his stall!! These are the most fantastic ideas ive ever heard of. Makes me wonder how the hell people figured out this would work?? Imagine their surprise!!
Heres hoping the Big Guy keeps healing and getting stronger everyday!
February 12, 2010 12:44AM
lol... amnion is for healing wounds, placenta is for bringing mares into heat... so educational. I talked to the barn owner and to another boarder today about this. The boarder knew of the honey trick and could understand the reasoning behind the spiderwebs. I read somewhere though that the horse better have a tetanus shot (which I guess should be done because of the wounds) if you are using the webs... People did heal before high tech medicine and some remedies were used for centuries. Sad that some were forgotten!
February 12, 2010 02:18AM
Hey Folk's, I'm liking the way the Honey is working, in just a few days, to me the open part of his wound at the top of his shoulder is looking less fussy , and like its closing in tighter with better colour, I did find a few stitches out today though, could have been just a stretching while he was out today, but not anything that looks in need of Vet attention. But I did find a man from not to far away that does Equine Chiropractic & Massage today and have booked him to come out on Saturday, he comes highly recommended, and just give Thunder a look over, maybe if we start with him early, it will settle down some of his stiffness and the way he is carrying himself. After hearing this week from one of the witness's that seen Thunders impact, it isnt any wonder he is walking in baby steps. When the car hit him, it was in his front left shoulder, but then I guess he flipped up on the hood and than right on his back, went up and over the roof of the car, and right off the other side , he hit Butt first to the ground and then his back with all 4 legs in the air, explaining the massive impact trauma to his shoulder and chest, but then the lose of a bunch of his mane and hair from his back and rump. Quinton was far enough behind in the chase, he didnt see the impact, only heard it trying to catch up, so didnt see how Thunder landed " Thank God" Even if this fella could start with massage and show us some things to be doing with Thunder as well to make sure everything in there is healing in alignment. Tomorrow he'll start having some homemade muscle rub on as well, now that we're not as worried about those open spots as much, we were more affraid of anything spilling over onto to the fresh wounds that would caue him any more pain than he is already in, but the scraps and scratches on his butt and back are all closed over and looking pretty good. We're all feeling positive and like Thunder is moving ahead well, baby steps, but ahead none the less !!!!
February 12, 2010 10:14PM
thank you for the update. Poor guy!! He will be sore for a long time. I was wondering today how you rehab him to be able to work by this summer. His muscles could atrophy... Still thinking of all of you and jingling for him.
February 12, 2010 10:46PM
Oh , Big Thunder Boy will be out for the season, I'm thinking he will be lucky to see any harness before a year, no sense pushing anything with him, even though both Vet's swear he will make a full recovery and that the muscles and tissue will all repair and heal, no horse can take an impact like he did and walk away whistling Dixie in anything less than a year. Uncle Jimmy will have to do the working for them, not a big deal, its just a longer process with 1 horse in harness, and at this point, Quinton is just so happy Thunder is still moving and making slow progress, I dont think he's given it much thought past day to day with him..Even though he walks like a new foal, I still want him out there every day, I'm a firm beleiver in the herd dynamic's being a big part of his healing, he'll fight harder if he has his herd in front of him, then locked in a barn in solitude..

Spider webs, honey and all....
February 14, 2010 10:33AM
Feeling a little sad for Thunder this Morning, Quinton and his Dad, have Uncle Jimmy in harness this morning, to draw the stoneboat with a load of Elm firewood thats been cut back in the bush, Jimmy danced un easy looking for his mate to his left, and Thunder hobbled along watching them leave !!! only went a few feet and then just stood to see them go. For horses that have had job , a partner, and in the hub of a busy farm, its hard for them to see that partner disappear without them. Our Barrel Horses are the same, when they see the trailer get hooked on and come up the lane, if you load a couple, the rest run the length of the lane fence to see where they are going and whinny after them. Around here, the trailer means so many different things, they could be barrel racing, going to a fair, hitting the trails at Algonquin, they are never sure, just know its an adventure somewhere and dont want to be left behind.. Soon Buddy !! you'll be steppin up on left shoulder with Jimmy..
February 14, 2010 11:27AM
Yes, I can imagine you'd feel a twinge for Thunder, but the alternative could have been so much worse. Mr. Miracle Thunder will be out there soon enough. Yippppeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
How wonderful to be able to feel that twinge of regret for Thunder(and Jimmy) rather than that hot knot of grief that takes so long to manage.
Your farm sounds like a happening kind of place!! I love to hear about it!!

Hey SixHOrses.... you don't know the half of it.... her place is full of hustle and bustle and it could not be more appropriately named ....
February 15, 2010 05:12PM
LOLO, yes Stoney has been here on many ocassion to witness the Mayhem and chaos of Crazy Acres Ranch. It is a steady flow of folks up and down the laneway, some here to ride, some to visit, and others to just sit under the maple and watch the the herd at their finest. I came home one day to find a strang car by the drive shed and someone sleeping in our big Hammock in the Maples !!! it just seem's to be a gathering place of Yahooie. You never know what you might find, one kid with a team of horses in the front paddock, one bareback barrel racing , and the other in the Pigeon hole of the barn hip trying to shoot the other two with his slingshot !!! Its a busy and hustle bustle place , where everyone has a job, cats , dogs , horses and humans, where the kids here know the sting of a long day behind a horse on Plough, and the bitter end of a splittin maul , they can drop it, haul it by horse and then saw it all with by Crosscut, Swed and Buck saw, they keep nine bush cards ahead for this old farmhouse every season, skid it to the Sugar Shack , collect their sap by horse, cook it by flat pan on open fire , not out of necsesity !!! but out of the love of the " Old Way" they've been taught as well the love of the beast. Quinton's sister is our 16 yr. old , 115 lb. bomber that can can drive any team to work as well as any man Ive ever seen.
As Stoney can tell you , to visit here could draw you into a trail ride and cookout or a game of bareback tag, manhunt by horse, or war with a potato gun on horseback !!! and yet these kids still find the time to be top students, Championship athlete's and many time over Humanitarian and Citizenship Award winners, with rosey cheeks, big smiles, and funny, funny humours !!! it's a busy palce that falls silent most nights by 9 and awake at first light to do it all over again.
It only occured to me a couple of months ago , how losely we use the term Horsemanship today, when an 84 year old man , I had never met before , came down my laneway after pulling over road side to watch Quinton with Thunder and Jimmy pull a load of Cedar logs across the front of our farm, with his sister right behind and a team of Canadian mares in harness skidding a load of limbs, and their younger brother riding the team, He told me that he hadnt seen a young lad work a team like that or as good at the end of lines in about 55 years, and never seen such a " WEE SPIT OF A GIRL " ever drive a team like that, so I told him to go on up ahead and meet them coming into the barnyard. He ended up standing there over an hour with them as the got all their harness's off and horses into the stable, just talking about his work as a boy and young man with horses and the hard time they lived after the war, then helped Quinton sharpen the Cross cut saw's with the best edge they have ever seen, he's been back many times since then, and has become a welcome visitor.
So if you happen to drive by a place where there's a Rooster riding around on horse named Jenna's back " because he loves her " kids bareback barrel racing out front or you see people on horses jumping off a railroad bridge into the water to swim, you know you've just found Crazy Acres Ranch !!! and come on in... Happy Family Day Folk's

Your life sounds truly amazing! I wish I had grown up like that.Something I would wish for my family to experience for sure.
Its nice to know that in this ridiculas age of technology (as I type on my MacBook!) that some people have hung on to what is truly important.
You are blessed to have such a life. Give Thunder a scratch for us! I would imagine that Thunder loves being part of such a wonderful family, and can only assume thats where his strength to survive has come from!

I dont remember making a plan to raise them this way, but their Dad and I were both raised by Horse people, and even on a big dairy Farm, there were always Drafts and saddle horses as well, my husband's family were part of the up-rooted airport expropriation program in the 60's in Stouffville Ont. so they had to leave their Dairy operation there and settled here in Hastings County to a big 300 acre farm that had very little of the acerage cleared to cropping land, with 8 children and some good strong boys , after arriving here they paid for that big farm entirely with the logging they clearded off that land by horse and hand, took them 5 years, and even though my husband was only 7 when they arrived, if you were old enough to walk, you were old enough to drive horses or cut. My Family were strickly horses and catttle, and again came from folks that loved not having to pay for tractor fuel if it could be done by horse power and hay !!! we were 13 in the household, so were very diverse in what we could do to keep everyone feed, warm and clothed, and horses were such a huge part of daily life, and thats what I mean by the losely used term Horsemanship today !!!
I received an email asking me what I meant by " Horsemanship today "
In our home growing up, if you werent looking after the horses properly, it effected us immediatly, if you didnt watch the mares and their foal's and the rest herd in the way that they communcated with one and another, then you didnt understand how to work shoulder to shoulder with them, ill trained horses were a dangerous risk to everyone in close confines with them. And our biggest theory that we lived by daily was my Grandfather used to tell us and make us live by was that anytime a horse goes willing to harness for you, or willingly stands to allow on their backs, he better by rewarded with kind hand, touch on thier body that simulated a acceptance touch of his/her mother or herd members thats been imprinted familar to them from birth, and a change of scenery !!!! if we were barrel racing at fairs one day, we had to trail ride them to a swim in the river the next, if they were logging the bush that week, on weekends they were allowed to forage in the back freely, with kids on their backs, they went from wild apple tree to open sap buckets as they pleased, again they got bathed in the river, rode to neighbours, and played with. even when the Drafts went on the trailer, they werent sure whether they were going to work off property or to be rode like a good cutting horse to get summer wild pasture cattle !!!! Dont expect an animal as smart as a horse to do the same thing for you for 20 years and be happy about it.
We had more horses than I could ever remember come and go , being broke and trained for other people, Grampy was a great ole horse dealer !!! he wasnt formally educated , and his whole theory was that when you "break" train a horse, big or small , you will never out power, out muscle or out temper horse,
he'll be standing long after your exhausted and laying on the ground. But you watch how his Mother and senior herd memebers in a natural setting discipline him when he's being a bully or bad with them and use some of those pressure spots on his body to inforce descipline and manipulate his body movement, and then how they touch them with forgivness in seconds, I can rememeber in 45 years ,ever seeing a Mother mare reach out and open hand slap her foal in the side of the head, or run over and pick up a stick off the ground and flail it on his back, but I certainly have watched her get mad at that baby for his rude pushy behaviour and grab him by the mane bed and give him a good shake, or swing her head hard into to his chest to make him step back, and give him a bunny kick above his cornet band when he;s striking out at her in spoiled anger. you will go a long way in training a horse to have respect and a desire to live amongst us, to train a horse and send him off to a new home that has no repect, understanding or fear of consequece and his lower rank with you , is to send a horse that is MAD, and could possibly hurt to bread earner man of that family or worse even, his child.
So these guy's have been raised the same way, versatility with horse's is everything here, they all have to be given a job, made to meet the humans daily for feed and close contact in stables, and work as hard as the horses they ask to do it. People stop here when they see the road gates closed and walk in because the know that it means the horses are all down here at the house with us, doing regular lawn maitenance, milling around the picnic table as we eat, and on some occassions, the mares decided to give birth down here at the house , so when we get up in the morning you swing the door open to a new baby on the ground at the porch, with a pleased as punch Mamma. During foaling season, we locked the road off, open the barnyard gates and allow them all to roam the whole property, its a good feeling to know that mare's choose to come down to the house and foal here with us as thats their saftey, and Uncle Jimmy is standing close over his newest herd memeber, inspecting it closely !!! I realize not all horse owners are in a position to be able to live that way with their horses, but if we could just all give horse a sense of duty and responsibilty to the living creatures around them, we'd have a lot happier horses and owners.
Wednesday night here is another Township open meeting and one of the matters on the table again is the Wolf Bounty, a handful of us are going , this time expecting a big turn out again from the " Save The Wolves Group " I will be bringing pictures of the night Thunder was hit, and the repair shots , as well asking the Save The Wolves Club if they are very serious and dedicated to the saving of these preditors, if they would like to start an account of their private funds to help the farmer replace or repair their livestock in lew of the Bounty !!!!! Bet you that floats like a turd in a punch bowl !!!

What an interesting life you have!! If I were closer I sure would like to visit and meet you and the herd. Who knows though, one day on my way back from Montreal, I could mosey over to Ottawa, then back towards our old cottage on Stony Lake. I'd have to go through Hastings Co. and not far from you... Good luck on Wednesday night!!
February 16, 2010 02:01PM
Oh yes, Stoney lake is only about 40 mins.. from me here, have friends on the lake as well, beautiful spot !!!!! We trailer there sometimes in summer and ride the rim of the Northeast side of the Lake and take the horses in swimming at the old boat launch, great spot for day rides and lunch out... take them back to Lingham
lake quite a bit too, have some great shots of them there last summer. I' m going to have Stoney try and post some pics of the mares foaling here at house, and their life here with us.. take care
February 16, 2010 02:09PM
lol... I spell it Stony because we were right by Viamede (and the glass house)and that's how cottagers spell it at that end. The Eastern part of the lake was spelled Stoney... In-laws sold the cottage 11 years ago. I miss the lake although it's become more Muskoka than it used to be, but I sure don't miss the weekly commute on Friday and Sunday nights (3 hours + each way). My daughter and her fiance go to Bancroft on a regular basis for car rallys up there...
February 16, 2010 03:45PM
Yep, Know exactly where you mean, and years ago, it was still old Cedar shake family cottages, some nice ole Craftsman style cottages, now you go there, and its all bought up City Professionals with security power gates, video surveillance camera's and indoor pools, and servants quarters over the 4 car garages, that they use about 3 weekends a season !!!! And the Viamede is completely done over by Restaurant Makeover.

Well, no Wolf Bounty here for us just yet, its under advisment and needing a bit more time for discision making, but I think we were heard loud and clear, maybe louder then the Save the Wolf Club !!!! and the pictures of Thunder needed very little explaination, with 7 other accounts of livestock death and attack since their last meeting, we'll see. But Thunder is having his draining tubes removed tomorrow, all of his inside stitching is healed and dissolved, but they are leaving the outside hide row there for another 5 days !! but he's outside everyday till supper, and moving along much better, still stiff, but not taking those little baby steps anymore. The Honey is working marvelously, his open wound is closed with a more soft tissue look to it , rather than a dried and rough layer. he had a hip alignment last weekend, and will have another adjustment tomorrow, but all in all, everyone seem's to be very happy with his progress and that he his moving ahead much quicker than any of them thought he would..all of this week, his pain medication has been cut in half daily and he will be finished the cycle of Uniprim antibiotic this Saturday, hoping to have him off all pain meds by next week.. will get some pics today !!!

Wonderful news

That is great news.... I hope to see him in person soon....
March 3, 2010 10:10AM
Hey Folk's
Thunder had another visit from Campbellford Vetinery clinic yesterday, and all of his stitches are now out, draining tubes are gone, they had decided to leave that outside row of stitches in exceptionaly long because of the size and weight of that flap being held up, but new tissue has attached very well and is healing nicely... there is still a huge whole open on the top of that wound, which Quinton had to flush daily with saline and clean it out with gauze, he can fit his entire hand in that opening and as horrible as it looks, we're told it has several layers of new growth that looks healthy and his once open shoulder joint is now covered with a new layer of skin and you can no longer see the ball joint rolling. The Honey has worked great !! and his chest the was open from his throat to in between his legs healed completely up. Quinton has started him on a daily stretching exercise or pulling that front leg straight out front of him slowly and back up to a folded knee and release, then stretched back and straight..10 repititions of each twice daily, Thunder stands like a trooper for all of it, even his cleanings , he never fuss's or moves a muscle, the Vet "Cathy" thinks his great recovery has a lot to do with Thunders Tanacity and Quint's great after care !!! he is still on the Unprim antibiotic for another few days, and Bute at his night feeding until this weekend, I see that he looks to have lost some weight in all of this, although Cathy isnt concerned and feel's that it is from such a trauma and the pain factor afterwards, but as soon as he's finished the Bute which can be very hard on the stomach, he'll go into a heavy feeding of beet pulp again.. He's out everyday now with his herd, still moving slowly and very deliberate with his steps, but all in all, looking great..

Great news! I love the Thunder.
March 3, 2010 02:32PM
You read my mind... I was going to ask today about a Thunder update.
So glad he is doing well. A strong horse, great after care, a supportive herd. So what if he has lost weight, he will recover for sure. Who would not have lost weight after such an ordeal? I am so happy for your whole family! Pictures please?!! pretty please!!

Beautiful weekend here in Ontario, and a nice Saturday to lock those road gates and let the horses get down to the house for the first time since Oct. I looked out to see them all in a ground rumble run down the barn hill ,excited to come down here, but noticed Thunder not in the pack, so I hollared out to Quinton "where's Thunder" he walked a little further up the lane and then pointed and said " here he comes" so when I walked out on to the proch to look, there he was , with one eye blind Pony Mom and baby shuffling down the hill at a snails pace, but he made it down and resumed postion along side of Uncle Jimmy, I guess Pony Mom and baby figure the least they can do for the man that ran her baby to safety, is stay by his side to at least keep him company on his shuffle to the house !!!! I'm ceratin his desire to stay with his herd is pushing him to work hard thru any pain and stiffness. He's completely finished all of anitbiotics, and the open part of that wound is covered very nicely with new tissue and a constant layer of honey, have kept him on a small scoop of Bute still, just to make sure he stays on top any pain, as long as I seen no signs of it bothering his stomach , I'll keep him going.
I did feel a little sorry for him though as he stood and watched Jimmy and few others rolling on the fine gravel of the driveway.. at one point he looked to be trying to buckle that knee down in an attempt to go to the ground, but quickly changed his mind !!! no rolling for the Mighty Thunder yet, soon Buddy..

I love the updates... if you have time, can we get some more recent pictures, ie less gory ones!! lol
He was lucky he needed the honey before the bugs came out!!
March 8, 2010 09:28PM
I'm going to set the camera right beside the door, cause everytime we get up there with Thunder to do his stretching exercises ,I think about the fact that I should takes some pics, I will make that my project for tomorrow..promise !!!

March 12, 2010 05:34PM
OHHHHHH, that just instantly hit my stomach with a very overwhelming and familiar pang of sickness and dread , it's the most helpless feeling you could imagine to see your horse in that kind of shape !!! your heart pound's in your chest, its hard to breath, mind races, and when you go to take off on a run, your legs just feel like you've got cement boot's on and you cant seem to get to them fast enough, your in slow motion .. Jingles for Amigo and his Family !!!! If I learned anything from Thunder in this, it's that you just have no idea how hard they will fight to stay with the people they love, it's amazing...
March 12, 2010 09:18PM
The one thing we have all talked about and agreed on here is that we are so grateful that we were home, because I'm certain if we had been away and this happened to Thunder, and he was laying in the ditch in the company of strangers, dont think he would have made the walk to the house, I think he would have went into shock and certainly bleed out before the Vet could get here, it's your presence for the most part that keeps them standing. When we were waiting for the Vet and had packed his wound with cob webs, Quinton stayed standing in front of his head, with his forehead resting on Thunders face, and a few times I seen him smell Quintons tear soaked face. Quinton was so upset and his voice was trembling as he talked to him, that horse knew that Quinton couldn't part with him right now, so he fought to stay and even the next 6 hours that must have seemed a torture to the poor horse, the only movement he made when she would start sewing and area of a lot of nerves was to turn his head into Quinton's chest and let deep sighs out...As my Grampy used to say " They are as tough a whalebone, and as soft as butter "
March 12, 2010 09:33PM
one day... I really want to meet you and your family, 2 and 4 legged! I just love your philosophy...
March 13, 2010 01:18AM
I must say Thunder is looking might fine! Its been a tough thing waiting for updates on him. I kinda would peek at your posts just in case it was bad news. The photos of him were surprising. He has healed very well! My son saw the pictures today and said he felt sooo bad for that horsie.
Hopefully Spring, warm air and soft ground will ease his aches a little!
March 17, 2010 10:44PM
Update !!! Thunder had his last check in with the Vet, and all is very good, the rest will be enitrely up to him in his recovery, but he is walking much. much better with a full extension to his leg, he isnt running by any mean's !!!! but he's moving without such deliberate steps and more freely.. tonight will be his first night without Bute !!! and as long as he isnt showing me any signs of stress with pain, we'll try and keep him off it.. Although the Vet isnt concerned with weight lose with him, it bothers me, so I'm in a bit of a hurry to get him on some heavy feed's that would have maybe caused a problem with the Bute, so we'll let that clear his system for a couple of days and put the grub to him LOLOL... all in all, he's looking really good around the injury, and his spirit's are good, he laid down today on the barn hill in the sun !!!! big step for him to do, but he was able to get his leg tucked in under him and get up just fine with a little bit of rocking. Cathy is going to be dropping in on him now and then " Unofficially " just when shes passing by, seem's she has formed quite an attachment to the big guy thru all of this ( greet's him always with -- Hello my wonderful Brave Boy ) and would like to just drop in and see his progress !!! we have been keeping her up to date with pics of Thunder from the night of the accident to present and she has started a progress board in her waiting room at the office of him.. Quinton sent her with a very nice card of Thanks , a pair of awesome Icelandic socks as her feet where freezing in her boots the night of the accident, and a loaded Timmies card to help on her late night emergency call's, she was thrilled !!
March 24, 2010 10:12AM
Update on our Wolf problem here today, it was announced this morning on the radio the the proposed Wolf bounty for Hastings and Prince Edward County was turned down !!! as council's felt it would be too much of an expense to pay out a bounty on preditor's !!!! I guess they havent lost a horse like Thunder or their own dog's in the yard as of yet, or seen what a Vet bill could be like after a horse is hit on the road running from wolves. I'm P****D to say the least !! and only hope to God, we dont wake on morning to the radio new's that a small child has been attacked playing in their yard, I wonder if they would think that was worth maybe a 100.00 preditor bounty bill ??
March 24, 2010 10:22AM
this may sound a bit odd, but would a way to make a point be to submit your vet bills to the county for reimbursement since they were caused by uncontrolled wolves in the county? particularly since you had witnesses.
I don't expect you will get anything but it may highlight the fact that as a taxpaying citizen you are expecting the county council to ensure the county animal officers are dealing with 'wild threats' to the safety of human and livestock in the county, and by having known packs of wild hunting animals uncontained/uncontrolled there is a cost, and here it is.
A very professional and unemotional, well argued letter along with vet bills and photos and estimated costs of 'downtime due to recovery' for the big guy (housing/feed costs, costs to replace him temporarily in your team as he heals etc) may just nudge council to take another look? oh, and do the research on the county and provincial bylaws so you can quote the law and line number, makes for a convincing argument. and if you can't get in front of council, perhaps a well placed call or two to a local newspaper or interest group who may wish to assist you in your 'claim' - with a by-product being reconsideration of how to handle the wolf problem (not necessarily bounty, but definitely a more 'active' control)
just a thought........I heard that somebody in our county recently submitted the cost of his cow lost to coyotes and got reimbursement....a little different but similar idea....
jingles to Thunder, the big guy is often in our thoughts here

That's the sad part of all this DF, the list of first hand accounts and attack's already presented to council was staggering of livestock, domestic pet's and a M&R finding of the low deer population driving the preditors into our backyard's, wasnt found sufficient enough , we too have a individual livestock lose payout for preditor attack's in each of our municipalities, but it's minimal and doesnt stop the attack's or lose of your animal's, nothing for the fortunate one's that survive it and then stand in pain and recovery for months after though, we would have been paid out 300.00 for Thunder's life should he have died that night. That 300.00 dollar's would have been well spent on 3 dead wolves to have Thunder healthy, pain free and doing what he loves with Quinton .. in my opinion anyway's !!!
March 24, 2010 11:01AM
Gess Guy's, sorry, that does sound a little Huffy, but what's wrong with peoples logic ?? they would rather pay 300.00 for the life of a horse like Thunder , than to do something about it and prevent it from happening again and again.

Hey Folk's.. got a chance to get some pics of Thunder for you today... he has really progressed quickly this last month, has got very good extension both out to the front and back, is able to really long stride again, if its been a long day and lots of travel for him, he will still walk a little lighter on that front leg, but normally he is very good..still one spot open along the top of the initial wound, but Vet says it will be the very last spot to close, so for now , Stoney gave us some very good Aquacell dissolving dressing as well we coat it with an iodine /fly repell spray and all is looking good !!

He really is a miracle SH's, he's very tough with huge heart, and is just loving his newest babies to the herd that are in with him, climbing that hill to watch over and follow them has helped I'm sure.. also he has had amazing care with his Vet's, they have been great to do un-official stop in's on their way by to see him and take the time to show Quinton lots of helpfull stretching exercises with that leg to help with mobility for him, and after this all heal's up and closes over, they are going to help Quinton with a modified neck pad to get him started back to recovery and build those shoulder muscles up strong at the injury point, as good a new !!! his chest is completly healed over and closed, you cant even see where there was even a hole that could fit 2 football's !!! Lady Luck has been on his side all the way....from his medical care to his owner...

Hey Folk's, thought I would update the Thunder man as of today !! He is doing great, all wounds have long since closed up nicely, the Honey directly to the wound has truely been a wonderful healing solution, there is only a fine line now growing back in with hair where that horrendus wound was... we havent seen any type of limp on his front in about 6 weeks now and he has been turned back in with the big herd to travel the place again, I think the climbing and distance he travels everyday has helped built that weak shoulder back up nicely. Today ole Uncle Jimmy is "working for his oats " as my Grampy used to say, pulling out giant pine logs for Quinton to built his loghome next year and Thunder has been left behind with the mares, but Tuesday he and Jimmy are going to stay for the last bit of thick lush pasture over at the home place together, as I feel he can be safely out of eye shot now. I would like him to have another 100 lbs on by winter though and short travel and un touched pasture should do the trick for him.. Quinton has been jumping him bareback and riding him around to gather up horses and just cruise around the farm, he plans to ride him at least 2 times a week over the winter, God Willing he will be working his muscles and shoulder back up by spring, and with a new modified Gel collar and light Cedar poles to work with , he will be back to his almost as good self by next summer and not feel so left out when Jimmy goes out the gate....
August 22, 2010 10:59AM
Wow! Isn't that just the best freaking news!! Soooooooooooooooooooo good to hear this. Maybe a pic?????
Congratulations to Quinton and Thunder
.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on this miraculous recovery.
