Hey Folks..

This Greg McCann has contacted several horse add's of a freind of mine, and used the exact same format in each one, never asked to even see a picture of the horses he wants to buy, and as soon as she returned an email telling him that she would want to follow to pick up driver to the horses's new home, he dropped any further communication, not another word, now a few weeks has went by, and he has answered to ad in the same format again !!! please pass the info onto any friend's that may have horse ad's up right now, maybe they have got this same offer to purchase and request for banking info..I fear that he is a meat buyer and will get his hands on an un suspecting horse seller's backyard good horse that is being sold cheap with hopes of a good home and it will end up on a kill floor within the day. The asking for banking info scares me as well.

Thanks

That's a typical internet scam, the format and english match - not likely a meat buyer

Agreed. Not a meat buyer. Just a foreign Scammer trying to get your $$. Many people fall for these on a regular basis. Sad :(

Yup, agreed. Not a meat guy just a scammer... I still can't believe people fall for that crap.

Yes, from Nigeria...

The way it "works": they will send you more money than the price of the horse. They ask you to send the difference to so and so for payment of transport or boarding or whatever... You deposit the cheque, send the money and find out later the cheque was no good. Meanwhile, you are out of the difference!!!

Anytime you advertise anything for sale online, there's a good chance you'll receive a "response" similar to the one above. The easiest way to cope is just to delete them and ignore them.

But as the others mentioned, its highly unlikely its a meat buyer. In my experience any meat buyer that is trolling online ads is generally only attracted to the "free" or extremely cheaply priced horses AND generally concoct a very good, very believable story that they are the perfect forever home for your beloved horse.

That said, I've yet to have seen proof of anything like this happening in Ontario (yet). There's been a few scenarios that "appear" that this is what has happened, but in each one, there was another suspicious factor involved that makes me doubt the whole story.

(For instance, in one scenario, that some of you may remember, though it was some time ago.... the horse's owner wanted to send an older horse to auction, but didn't want to have their name (and stigma) attached to them so they advertised the horse on many different websites "Free to Good Home"... then told everyone online that the perfect family came along and took the horse.... then after a couple weeks, the horse owner posted online complaining about the new home and how they misrepresented themselves as a "family home" and that this new owner had sent the horse to OLEX. Turns out, because the horse world is a SMALL place, that it was discovered that the original owner and the new owner were friends and had fabricated the whole story. Not only is the horse community small, but people are fickle and the new owner turned on the old and revealed the whole story, providing receipts (from original owner & OLEX) as well as emails outlining the scheme.)

Anyhow, as much as many people like to vilify the meat buyers, please remember, they are only doing a job that sadly there is need and demand for... they are not the ogres that some would have you believe.

GP

And please don't bother filling up my inbox with hate mail about how I seem to support the slaughter industry and defend the meat buyers, blah blah blah... its getting old.

No GP... you are correct. The meat guys are just doing a job. I have never had an issue with them and they have always been as polite to me as I am to them. It's the screaming-mimis that pi$$ them off who rant and rage about what they do, all the while wanting to buy a horse the meat guy just bought. Their response was "If you wanted it, you should have bid on it". I rather agree.

I agree whole heartily with the need of the Meat buyer, there is need for them and Ive seen a few horses that certainly needed to go for meat myself to prevent another human from being killed or harmed under their feet, what I take acception too is the ones that wont tell the truth about what they do !!! and con unsuspecting folks into selling their back yard pet horses not yet broke or trained, cheap with the story that the horse is going to a very nice family farm !!! The meat market is what it is, Nessecary !!! I had never heard of these internet scammers before though !! WoW, that is pretty Crazy stuff, and glad to know about it, the girl they sent this too , is a newbie to the horse world, but still didnt have a good feel about this.. If your a Meat Buyer, step up to the plate.

I got nailed by a lady promising a forever home for my free 23 year old mare. 9 days later she had her up for sale. People will do or say anything. It amazes me at the lengths people will go to make a dollar.

On that note too - while I agree the meat industry is necessary - we each can do our part to making it less necessary - dangerous horses should be euthanized - be it the vet and a needle or a well placed bullet - selling to a meat buyer does not guarantee the animal will go to kill - if the safety of people is a concern - step up to the plate and make sure it gets done - if you can deliver to the slaughter house (humainly) and watch it happen that's different.

I feel VERY strongly about this - as a teen we sold my semi dangerous horse to people who knew what they were getting - but he got passed around a few times after and ended up sold as a 'kids horse' he tossed the kid and then injured and attacked the father... I wasn't there - so the whole story is up for grabs - but I wish we had done the right thing in the first place (the horse would fly off the handle unexpectedly - though we generally did all our own training we sent him out for training to a pro who said he was the hardest horse he'd ever broke).... and a couple years ago - when I found myself in a similar situation - the horse was euthed on property.
