So, recently I decided that I should probably buy a new(er) vehicle. I have wanted a good pick-up for a few years, but was scared off by the price of them.
Lately, there has been a lot of advertising about incentives and discounts so... I made an appointment with the owner of a local dealership(felt too intimidated, unfamiliar with the car game to go through the salesmen/women) He had two trucks warmed up and ready for me to test drive. Ford F150. Beautiful vehicles, up high, nice, nice, nice. The sticker price on the window was 42,000 dollars which was way more than I can contemplate.(This is a pretty standard vehicle, but 4x4) Right off the bat the fellow took 10,000 dollars off of that sticker price.
:scared: WTF?????? Still, when all was said and done that truck would have cost me 600.00 a month for 84 months!!!!!
I just couldn't justify that kind of coin. He was very upfront, very accomodating and made several other suggestions/different vehicles(used, oh pardon me, PRE-OWNED) But even buying a used truck the payments were in the 500 dollar range, a higher financing rate and still over 72-84 months. Of course you have less warrantee, blah blah blah... My 2000 Subaru was worth 1000 dollars as a trade in. Did I mention that the F150's don't come with a standard transmission anymore? I really like driving a standard.
I won't even get into all the 'iffy' incentive programmes that 98% of the population don't qualify for.

Next I went to the Subaru dealership. A neighbour of mine works there. 2010 Subaru Forester. MSRP 25,995 Standard, better financing rate. Pretty much a base model. With a 4000 dollar down payment 500.00 a month for 60 months. Not a mention of one penny off the MSRP. I can't stand it! I'm dealing from a position of complete ignorance and feel awfully uncomfortable with the whole process. He's telling me that there is only a 6% mark up on the Forester... As if I even know how that translates, and really, I don't care. I don't want to think about any of this. When they ask me how much I want to spend I want to say something ridiculous. I've been to the websites for comparing vehicles, and the caveat is always :"Dealer may sell for less". AAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

In my case, I don't want to put down 4 grand, but I still want the payments of 500 a month over 60 months... How do I know if what I am asking is reasonable???? Is there a line over which you will not cross???
Did I mention that I HATE, DESPISE, LOATHE, this experience???????????????
OK, I think I might be done. :)

You tell them what you want to pay, be firm. $500 still seems really high.
I put nothing down on my SUV and pay $319 ish a month over 60 months(financed through my bank). They came WAYYYY down on the price, and repainted the grill cause I thought it looked faded. It was pre-owned, but still rather new.
My mom was telling me my payments were high, she bought a brand new caravan and her payments are in the 2-hundreds. She did trade in, but her old van was crap.

My guy sells pre owned vehicles. Usually the customer tells him what they are looking for and he does his best to find it. He is as honest as the day is long. I had been dealing with him long before we were a couple. Years ago my mom thought he walked on water lol.
If Stratford is not to far to come I can give you his contact info. He's very careful about what he buys.

We have an F150 .... bitchin' wheels SixHorses!!
$500/month for 5 years (60 months) is $30,000, correct? That's with 0% financing though and I think you can still find that if you shop around. What interest rate was he offering? What did he "add on" that you could live without, or was the $600/month for vehicle, taxes, interest?
Have you thought about leasing?

They do have some smokin good deals right now on different vehicles.... but high payments come with buying new.... have you considered a lease at all or is that an option for you ..... WE are just in the process of buying out our lease ... we have 57000 kms on the truck we leased and the buy out will be about $18000 and payments will be over $400. It was a tough decision with almost $10000 dollars off a new vehicle but hard to swallow that $714 payment on a new truck.
Good Luck Jane I do not envy you the position. It is really hard.

I remember when I went to our local dealer to get a used car. He tried to sell me a couple of different cars that were way out of my price range. I told him again my firm price and told him I would pay cash. He told me....wait for it..."Maybe you should come back with your husband if you want to work out a deal!" Can you imagine? I almost cracked him one. Needless to say I found exactly what I was looking for in the auto trader for about 7 grand less than the best the dealer was offering.

Good luck. I don't envy you.

Gruffy,

I've emailed 5 dealerships and there is no 0% financing on a Ford F150, not from what I can see. There was NOTHING added on to the vehicle I looked at. It was 540 dollars a month for 84 months, taxes, PDI, everything in. I believe the rate was 5.75. The bank is higher. The truck started at 42, went down to 32, but you put 15% right back on top of that 4,600 in taxes alone, plus the cost of borrowing...
I do have to have a 4x4 given where I live.
Leasing decreases the price by about 100 bucks, and if this is going to be used on a farm every scratch and dent is going to hurt the lease.
When I use my calculator, I can't even figure it out. Waaaaahhhhhhhh.

Stoney,
So I'm not missing a few marbles?? Even with 10,000 dollars off the MSRP the payments are still in the realm of 700 dollars??? I thought maybe I was experiencing the early onset of Alice Heimers.

Brisky,
Thanks so much for the offer. If I can't figure things out on my own, I'll be in touch.

Alimom,
Make sure you tell that story to EVERYone. ;) I'd personally like to email the fellow you dealt with and tell him why I'm not coming in to spend 40 grand at his dealership. :)

Why do I feel like I've passed through a labrynth and still have nothing to show for it? BLECH

I don't know where you are, but there's a dealer in Barrie that has been advertising NEW F150's for as low as $12,000.00. It's probably the most basic model on the lot, but we're going up to take a look. If this is the old bait and hook routine, you might hear about a car dealer homicide in Barrie. If not, then I'll come back on-line and give you the info.

I'm with you Six. We too are looking at trucks right now. Our 2000 Yukon XL has been sooo good to us but her days are now numbered and we really require something reliable when hauling either horses or snowmobiles around and about. With the 2 girls we need the crew cab and for sure want the 4x4. I'm also super partial to my heated leather seats....so basically geared to the loaded top of the line. We are not one to buy new, but anything with decent mileage is $25,000 and that monthly payment hurts :(

Imy boyfriend trains horses for a guy who sells used cars. He's very honest and will find whatever you're looking for.
He got my bf's father an excellent deal on a Toyota.
Maybe he could someone here?

p2c3d2,

About the Big Barrie Ford deal on F150's...

Maybe I can save you a drive...

Costco membership: 1000.00 off (can't run out and get one either, must be an on-going membership)

Retire your ride programme : 3,300.00 off. Only cars 1995 or older qualify.( Canadian Government Incentive Programme)

Drivers of Hummers/Saturns/ certain pontiacs: 1000.00 off because these cars/vehicles are not made anymore.

This is for a 4x2 regular cab Ford F150.
I do believe that this brings the cost down to 12,999.00 if you qualify for all the incentives. However, if you are like 99% of the population you might qualify for one. So, that truck will likely be more like 18,999 at 5.75% variable rate financing...

I think you should give them a call first or see what it says on their website. On the positive side, you won't need a car if you are in jail for assault or Murder one ;)

Hey, I've driven the 2010 Ford F150 and it is FANTASIC. High safety rating, good insurance rates. If you have a good downpayment and a decent trade, I think they are a great deal of truck. I just can't handle the 600.00 payment for 7 years.

I looked at pre-owned, but you didn't get the same financing rate, nor did you get the great discounts you get off the 2010's. As I said, the fellow took 10,000 dollars right off the sticker price of a 42,000 dollar vehicle. If there were 0% financing I would have jumped at it.

PS. I looked at a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. 500 bucks a month for 60 months at 5.99% financing

Teehee alimom...I went car shopping not THAT many years ago with my spouse. We test drove a Toyota and the dealer went with us (ick). He sat in the back and after a number of miles driven by my spouse - he pulled over to let me give it a try. As I glanced in the rear-view mirror I saw the dealer guy madly trying to wrestle the seat belt out from where it had been stashed behind him until that point.
As silly as it sounds - never really considered Toyota since.

i just bought an F-250 december 31. get to write off the taxes thanks to obama.
haul package. crank windows(something that won't break), plastic floor, cd player, cloth bench seat(comfy, unlike chevy's curved seats), standard cab.
interweb shopped. going to dealers in person might get me arrested.
was lured in to the dealership with the promise of 10K off the sticker price.
since i closed my 2 visa credit card accounts because they were going to raise interest to 21%, it dinged my credit. my interest is around 7%
i did get the extended warranty with a costco discount since ford's warranties are now tricky.
watch out for that.
3 year warranty, 1st year 100%, 2nd year i'd pay 30% of fixing, 3rd year i'd pay 40% of fixing.
eek!
sticker price was 29K, dropped to 19K, add 5 year full warranty (around $1200), payments for 72 months are just under 400. i did not want to pay that much, but oh well.
i don't need 4WD, and 2WD can haul more weight (why, i don't know).
i needed something powerful enough to haul my trailer.
now i have to put 1000 miles on it before i haul a trailer according to the booklet.

Well Folk's, all I can say is, no matter what way you slice it, dice it, or chop it, the cost of trucks today hurt, no matter what they offer, its still way too much money !!! I have the GMC 2500 Duramax Diesel Turbo, I Love, Love , Love it, but I Hate, Hate ,Hate how much I had to pay for it, but I will turn around again in another 3 years and do the same damn thing all over again !! because anyone who haul's their horses to show's and trail's or cattle to auction , wants to know they will arrive there with their animals safe and sound, so we'll go hunting for the best buy's we can every few years, " just as a matter of formality " we always like to think we got a great deal, and if your anything like me, you like to feel you really searched for the best truck at the best price.. fact is, the auto industry fleeces us at every turn, but we love our heated leather , bells and whistles, and no matter what the price is, it gives us great satisfaction to arrive with our horses and family feeling safe and in STYLE !!!! LOLO

SIxhorses,
I feel your pain, I am in a similar position... a pickup would be mighty useful... hell, just having the freedom to pick up my OWN hay and not have to rely on someone delivering it would be super fantastic! ;) I'm also in the position of not really wanting / being able to spend the money.

Everyone keeps talking about all the great deals to be had on new vehicle purchases these days, but I'm really questioning whether that applies to pickups... I'm thinking they are in more demand than some cars and therefore still command the premium price and interest rate.

Have you checked out the interest rate with your bank if you borrow the money directly from them? In the past, I've had them beat the manufacturer's finance rates by a substantial amount, not sure if that would hold true any longer, that was before "things changed" ;)

At this point, I will probably buy a used truck (cheap and likely ugly! ;) ) and have it as a 2nd vehicle, not my primary and give that a shot. I also have found a mechanic I really like, seems to be honest and works for a reasonable rate, so I'm not as afraid to buy used as I once was.

And Alimom, I had a similar experience years ago when I bought a "mini pickup", I told the sales guy I wanted to test drive a chevy s10 and he said "Hey there little lady, that's an awful big truck for you, how 'bout we take a pontiac grand am for a spin?" I resisted the urge to spit in his face and told him if he wasn't willing to show me what I asked for that I had wasted enough of my time, turned on my heel and out I went. He called after me "Have your husband come in and him and I can take the truck out...." I didn't look back, though I really wanted to kick him in the shin! ;)

Good luck Sixhorses, I hope you find a good solution... and if you do, let me know! :)

On sleazy car salesman..I hear ya, I had a dude that tried to sell me a big ole ugly piece of garbage, even after I said iw as not comfortable driving or handling it and it was over-priced..he couldnt get it through his head that I knew what I wanted.
So i finally said, "ya know what? I feel like Im talking to a brick wall. I'm going to go next door to Ford and see what they have" and I did.
AND he had the gall to look surprised and offended

:eye-roll:
