Looking for a beginner friendly horse

Hi all looking for a beginner friendly horse for my father, well his friend really. 22 year old - ridden a few times and has some natural talent (his second ride he rode out a running bucking episode lol), but no experience. Gelding or Mare - prefer older - over 10 likely - but age is not really that important - sound mind and body is. Horse needs to be sound - lots of trail riding will be done (with proper conditioning - feed etc). Not looking to spend a ton - as he will have to come get the horse (he's on the east coast - small place - not finding what they are looking for and he drives up to visit anyway) finishing training required is not a problem (my Dad is a trainer) but nothing that you wouldn't be comfortable letting a newbie ride on an open trail. Good home - all day turnout and stalled at night.
Let me know if you hear of/or have something that will fit the bill, my e-mail is MBRA518 at yahoo.ca (no spaces and an @ obviously)

No one knows any???

Unfortunitly none right now. You need a beautiful Stb My newest project is still healing up from a bow but IMHO Stb's make wondeful family/trail riding buddies Will continue to keep an eye and ear out

I think that could work too - but maybe a trotter? I'm hoping something comes up.

why not try going straight to the source?
OSAS?
track folks? see if anybody isn't making spring training times?

I'm thinking something already under saddle would be best for this situation. and I don't think OSAS adopts out of province do they??? off to check.

I recently was able to get my gelding into the OSAS program, he is already broke to ride, very smart. I do however don't think they adopt out of province, but it never hurts to check. If you do check out the website, my guy is currently being fostered and he's WIndsong Bratt, aka Charlie. Best of luck in your search!

The twice yearly guardian visits might be a problem given the distance.
They do pay mileage tho - and I've ALWAYS wanted to go out east....

MBRA518...where abouts are you located?...I have friends that have VERY safe, reliable trail horses for sale...for ALL ages...we're in the Sarnia area...don't know if you're willing to make a trip if you're too far

MBRA518,
Too bad you weren't looking for 'friendly beginner horses',
I have three of those!

LOL - Yah I think the OSAS would be out - besides that my Dad has a bias about STBDs :rolls eyes: - But I do know where it comes from - I've seen those crazy ones at home too (for some reason local kids there seem to find the ones more like crazy just this minute OTTB??? - I've only seen the nice quiet family type horses around here - why is that?), so that wouldn't go away until he actually met and rode a nice one - but that can be done too.
Sarnia shouldn't be an issue he's driving 20 hour already But we'd likley look closer to home first.
I do know that this horse will see ALOT of riding - think trail riden for hours a day type thing (though I've introduced him to Fugly now - so between Dad and fugly it will be done right lol) So I'm thinking maybe an Arab or arab cross or even an appy maybe a good fit? STBD do well with that type of riding too don't they?
LOL Six horses - yah we need the words rearranged a bit in there lol. Ironically 'I' gave one of these alway last summer (not my horse - but one that was boarding with me) We trailered him out east and my mom's neighbor has him - and they are doing fantastic.

Hey if you check on the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation bulletin board, there is a Standardbred Rescue, I believe its called Morning Star Acres. She is constantly placing Standardbreds. She is the only one I know of out there, and she is located in NB. I will try to get you her info now!

AAAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!
Don't say Blue Roan.... DRAFT Waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh,
That's what I've wanted for EVER!!!!!!!
Would you consider a trade???????? I've got some BEAUTIES, a little younger than yours and a lot less experienced, but with your home and experience you could change that in a BIG HURRY.
I believe GP and Stoney would vouch for my honesty, my care and my horses.

Hey SH, I'll try and get some pics from today, we had " Cinder " out for a trail ride, did some ice crossing and bridges.. very tight, steep high ridge and thick bush whacking , we always try and put our horses thru every possible scenario when we are going to be selling them into a new home, so by the time they go, you can run ski-doo's, chainsaw's, road traffic, dog's , you name it, by them and the are what I like to call , very enviromentally conditioned for any rider, any place, any distance !!!.. so drop a line with a contact to send you out some photo's and you can take a look at her.

Just about post some pic of face book , Stoney is way savvy about getting that link up for me, so take a look and drop a line.. Blackstock is a familiar spot for me too, was raised on a farm on North shore of Scugog Lake, Little Britain, the farm that Maureen Cannington Horse Rescue rents now..

Dad is interested - Looks like he will be here in a week or so maybe - depends on a few things, when exactly he leaves.
Looking forward to pics - my e-mail is in the top CA5 - not sure how to contact you.

Sixhorses I have been just taking a look around at what my spring and early summer are looking like in respects to taking on a trade horse that may need some conditioning, dont think it would be a good idea for me right now, I"ll have 5 new foals on the ground on the Orchard hill by May , and still have 4 of our own 3 year olds to finish and get ready to go by summer as well, and I'll be short handed as my daughter will be leaving for a Rockie Mountain Ranch again in May and gone until Sept.. So I bettter make my time responsibility to the ones here needing finish training for new homes first. If anything changes for you let me know.
February 22, 2010 03:15PM
I talked to my Dad and he really likes Cinder (as to I) He's planning to head up soon - so we can set up a day to come see her once I know exactly when he will be here. - You have e-mail too CA5

No problemo, CA5,
Biding my time for a great, working, riding home for my critters but wanting and needing a been there, done that type. I thought I'd put it out there just in case it was a great thing for both of us.
