Hopefully it was not an anti-horse slaughter protest. :(

Yah, does look suspicious - but hey - it's a lot closer to OLEX than Quebec or Alberta.... all else being equal a shorter trip is easier on the horses.

MBRA518,
I agree totally... IF slaughter has to happen, shortening the transport is certainly in the horses best interest.

Unfortunately most of the horses slaughtered at Norval seemed to be from the States...and therefore most OLEX horses go the 8-10 hrs. to Quebec (or god forbid, Alta) I believe.

I still don't think slaughter HAS to happen... owners should be responsible for euthanizing their own horses and the EU can darn well eat their own horses. But money, always money... To me, slaughter is making it easy for irresponsible people. I will never agree to it and I don't want to hear "it's a necessary evil"... that's condoning it! And don't tell me neglect and abuse will increase. It has always existed, slaughter or not.

Well maybe when it is rebuilt, it can designed with animals in mind, and have that special 'spiral' pattern to it, that is supposed to keep the beasts relaxed.

FI I completely agree with this
'owners should be responsible for euthanizing their own horses and the EU can darn well eat their own horses'

But problem is they are not..... and no one if going to make them. In an ideal world this would work - but it's not. And shutting down legal slaughter houses just drives the whole thing underground.... with no regulation - I think it was fugly that posted something on some in Florida recently - scary from a human consumption and animal welfare POV. Look at the US - the only thing that happened with them closing slaughter plants was the horses now have to travel farther and/or to unregulated Mexico.... I don't see how that helped any horses.

IMO the slaughter debate is a moot point until the backyard/crappy breeders are under control.... Good breeders seem to adjust to the lowered demand - and the crappy breeders just keep going.... not good for the horse industry as a whole - look at the resent seizure...34 horses - many unhandled.... what will happen to them? If you can't get those people to feed them - good luck getting them to shell out the coin the have them PTS. There is a place I drive by and all horses are turned out - started with 3 mares - then they had foals.... and the next year - 3 more .... this year - we will see.... I don't know the story, and they are taken care of... but 9 horses in 1 paddock with 1 run in shed does not scream 'quality breeder' to me. That level is where this whole thing has to start if it is to be turned around. But that's just IMO.
