Well I'm damn glad I bought Jenna from you Stoney, I have no doubt that any mare that see's a bear right in front of her like she did, hears the rest of the trailriders horses behind her turn, bolt and run frantically away losing some of their riders, but decides with me on her back to advance forward and fight !!! would kick some serious BUTT to anyone on the ground attempting to get me down if she heard fear in my voice or felt my fear on her sides !!!! and the fact that she doesnt spook ever and makes the most hidious tarping sound when shes pissed, makes me feel pretty safe up there !!! I've never really ever thought of a human preditor on the trail before, scary notion that it's something woman have to be concerned of doing something they love.. sad more like it !!!

I admit I didn't read the whole thread on Coth... but I did shake my head AND roll my eyes... that poster lives in a different world than I do. (Though I have on occasion wanted a gun just to wave at people and complete the "crazy goat lady" thing I've got going on )

Did not read the Coth thread, but checked the poster. HunterTwo... well, 'nough said! She is VERY opinionated on a lot of things (esp. Obama) and seems to always have weird things happening to her (once was a sexual harassment from a non English speaking barn worker which went into racist posts and the thread was closed/deleted). On Off Topic days, if there is a political thread, she ll be there calling Obama all sorts of names and be really rude to any Dem poster. I tend to avoid her posts because they make me too angry and I don't want to get nasty.

we have crazies here.
in arizona, you can bring your gun to a bar unless they have a sign telling you not to. not kidding.
don't even want to get into crazy politics in the us.

OMG, and what the hell would you need a gun for when your out having a nice time and some drinks with friends ???? and what the heck are bar owners thinking of, letting people that are drinking in their run around with guns ??

I didn't read the whole thread, really didn't need too.
But my thought was "seriously now!"

Ok folks .... Thank God you have offered me some reassurance here.... I was floored... I could just see any one of my horses if you shot a gun off the top of them, you had better hang on to it cause you would be on the ground fallen prey to whatever you had just shot at ...... BIZARRE.
When I was in the Philippines years ago I was struck by the amount of guns that were carried around ... then I realize it was common place.
We have coat checks they had CHECK YOUR HAND GUNS HERE PLEAE signs in every building you went to even McDonald's.
Canada really is a sweet sweet home land isn't it.

Every time there is a thread on Coth, re trespassers, mean neighbours, etc., there are always posts advising shooting, showing a gun... I gave up posting there, but I am glad sometimes, some US posters say they will never own/use a gun. It is scary, but "your home is your castle" is a very strong feeling down there! I have been told too that "there are a lot of guns in Canada too!!" maybe, but I don't think the initial response would be the same...

I dunno, since moving out of suburbia, I DO understand the whole protect your property and your livestock stuff a lot more...though, honestly, I used to wish more for a gun IN suburbia to deal with unpleasant neighbours, loud teens, etc etc
I've had a few run ins with unwelcome visitors, especially pushy-don't-take-no-for-an-answer-we're-spreading-the-word-of-god people that I could imagine waving a gun around about (polite disinterest and polite requests to leave do not work, it seems, last time I had to get quite loud about it before they would even consider returning to their car... then when they made a final attempt, I threatened to call the police to have them charged with trespassing )
However, I do fundamentally believe that people problems are not solved with guns.
As for shooting from horseback, lots of people do it... you just have to train your horse to cope... I honestly think that's a great idea to teach your horse to tolerate it, even if you never plan on doing it. You just never know when that will be useful (like when you're riding near the road and a car back fires.)

I dont know about carrying a gun, here in Canada and on " CRAZY ACRES we seem to have a much more passive approach , and I have had a very sucessful " run off " of as you mention GP of - "unwanted solicitors " 3 summers ago , we were doing second cut hay, and it was on of those blistering hot Dawg Days, on was at home on horse back when my husband stopped along the road on the tractor ,with a load of squares, he looked terrible, really hot, dirty, covered in chaff, exhausted really !!! and I said the kids will be home in about an hour, so go to the house and have a shower at the outdoor shower that used to be on the back of our summer kitchen, just a spout ,tapes coming out from the back wall , and a cement slab on the ground, a hook for towels and a soap dish, I told him to leave his filthy clothes right there, and there were clean towels on the line, and I'd meet him back at the house in about 10 minutes !!! away he went... as I rode towards the house and climbed a big ridge , I seen a Van turning in off the highway and heading down our laneway, so I stepped it up to get to the house remembering he would be showering outside behind the house. As I broke the high crest of our barn hill , I looked down to see 2 ladies and a man out of the Van and walking across towards the house, at the same instant I seen my husband.. Yep Folks.. larger than life..butt- ass- naked, stark white but for a farmers tan, with the towel not around his waist, but around his neck and his work boots on !!! walking in a quick pace , head down, and he popped right out in their path !!!!! LOLOLOLOLO... their squeal alarmed the dog riding with me, and it set chase down the hill at them. They left 2 pamphlets on the picnic table and quickly got back in their Van and Booked it !!! We havent had any of them since !!! No need for a gun here.....

*laugh* I'm not so sure my husband would be glad to assist in this manner, but I'm positive that would be highly effective!!!
