Stallion's Running Free " What The Heck "

Could someone please give me 1 good reason why in hell you would ever have your Stallion running free in a herd of mares, when you have run out of feed every winter for the past 6 years ???? Or better yet, why you would have a Stallion producing grade offspring without buyer's in the first place ??
I've spent the better part of this evening on the phone, trying to help one of our local Yahoo's , find some hay for nearly nothing of course , and she's getting rid of some of the" left over " as she call's them, babies born from "09 and "08...Why You Ask ?? cause she has 7 maybe 9 mares to foal again this spring !!! and shes again out of money and feed. The last big crop of yearling to 3 year old's she dumped for 200.00 each, couldnt hardly be caught and had never been haltered. If you cant catch them and they have never been indoor's or haltered, what do you think the chances of them being wormed or having Vac's in their lifetime ???
Oh !! but its all Okay, cause she's got them Panic pre-sold to a guy coming from New Liskard with a big trailer , thats going to train them all for his riding Dude Ranch up there !! she just need's feed to hold her over until they are gone, and the mares left behind SHOULD be good until her pasture starts. She has a decent enough looking Paint Stud, but none of her mares are papered so shes allowing this Stallion to run and breed grade quality field wild babies. Now , I'm guessing her age to be about mid 40's, nice enough gal to talk to, but says the stupidest things when you ask her why she's letting those mares foal out all the time when she doesnt have the feed on 27 acres for all those horses , ( Oh, they are so sweet when they are born !!!!! and we cant catch the Stallion , He's kinda mean !!!! )
I have a Stallion here, he belongs to my son Quinton, but Quinton had already learned to be a pretty good Stallioneer tagging along with his Dad and assisting in controlled breedings, so he was very savvy at 18 at handling a Stallion and mare in heat in tight spots, so when a lovely young AQHA Stallion ( Command Me Awesome ) "Bullock " was up for sale last spring and Quinton could ride him as well, he asked to buy it !!! But without us having to say anything, in his plea to buy the Stud he offered up that he would pay for the Stallion to stay on at its current home so it would give him time to build a separate Paddock for him, and when I added that the area he had to a double fence with walk way in between, triple strand and electrified, could be nothing less then 4-5 acres of mixed flat, hilly, tree'd interesting terrain, so that he didnt get bored and could still see and interact with the herd all around him on 3 sides without being able to actually touch them, and he had to ride him out of that Paddock at least 3 times a week, winter and summer, hit the trail's and give him a job other than breeding, he agreed without any argument , got his Paddock built out of his pocket and has lived up to all of his conditions and is planning to run barrels with him this summer. We have 15 mares here, 4 were selected ( 3 of our own , 1 boarder's ) and put in foal with him.. But those babies are spoke for and will be leaving when they are weaned, imprinted, handled and haltered by 4 a month old. So if an 18 year old kid, can own a Stallion and give him a good quality of life but still keep him in control with the mares of this farm, why the hell cant a property owning , fully Grown Couple and family do it ????? GEEZZZZZZZZZ , is it Stupidity , Ignorance or a Form Of Neglect ???

It's all of the above!!
I am getting so annoyed and so blunt with people who keep their animals intact!! What for? For a bitch to have one litter, for the kids to see the miracle of life, because it is so cute.... OMG!!! Unless they can pass something positive to their progeny because of their stellar conformation or their accomplishments, why? and then not bother to halter, train, treat them... argh...
I have followed enough horse and dog rescues that I wish there would not be a single animal born for a few years. Especially to people like you describe. It is so much like Xena's former home!! let the stallions go and have fun! Gee great and then what happens to the foals/yearlings? They end up at auctions...
March 10, 2010 08:01AM
Sounds like that stallion would make a good gelding, is she interested at all in stopping the breeding?
Is she employed?
I'm seeing a pattern around here of people who own horses they can't afford, always asking for handouts and bailouts, but won't go out and get a job.
March 10, 2010 10:51AM
There's the other thing, NO THEY DONT WORK, they have a dog's breeding with a pile of little dogs and she breed's those mixed dogs Shitzapoo's, Terripoo's and all those kinds of dogs, they always have ad's up in the local CO-OP and bulletin board's, she told us once she doesnt advertise on the net because someone had her ad's blocked on her email address " totally un-founded though " !!!!! If you remember back last summer, Maureen_ Cannington Rescue put a call out to adopt a beauty little female dog , that Maureen ended up herself taking, that dog was from there, I took the dog 2 months before and got her house trained and socialized here with us , they had to get rid of a bunch of young females they had kept back from litters as future breeder's, than couldnt afford to keep them, saying the puppy market has went way down, and the family they had in Toronto that bought all their puppies ,wouldnt take anymore, I ended up with 2 and placed them both, they were 2 of about 30 , 6 month old females of every kind of mixed breed.
They have no plan's of gelding him !!!! but have no buyer's waiting for a foal ??
when you mention that they should separate him or Geld him, the husband says crap like " Oh Poor Guy, that's so mean !!!! he loves his mares.. And then has the nerve to ask me, how come Quinton's stallion Bullock gets bookings to breed and how she should go about advertising her Stallion. Well first off, her Stallion has been covered in burr's the entire time I've known him, I have no idea what his tail looks like, its been a massive ball hanging for years, you cant get within 50 ft of him, and they tell me if you corner him he will rear up and strike out at you and try and run you over !!! They dont have a friggin clue about Stallion behaviour. They bought him at an auction when he was 6 months old and that was the last time he was really handled, he's 8 now.
When I told her ,we dont really advertise Bullock, but because we're out and about in the Western Gaming world and have a lot of traffic thru this farm with those Western riders and I run the local club here, those Quarter Horse people just know him and it's word of mouth, and that population of people that bring their mares to be bred, are looking for a very specific future horse for themselves, their mares are good papered stock, and all are in a postion to care long term for a foal born to them, all are looking to have a good working horse for themselves, and are watching closely for good temperament, work ethic and Stallion to be a Gentleman Breeder with their much loved mares. After telling her that in a very nice way, she looks at me and says, " Well could you let them know I have a paint Stallion !!! I dont care if their mare is papered !!!! She missed the point totally...
I now know the true meaning of what my Grampa always said.. There's no bigger fool than the man who wont see, not that he cant see, but wont see !!! Why is this making me feel so frustrated and ANX, there will always be these people. they just seem to be in my line of vision constantly anymore !!!! Is it the tough economy that is driving them to the surface ???
March 10, 2010 11:10AM
crazyacres...
first of all...it's not the tough economy...stupid people float...THAT'S what's driving them to the surface...lol............okay, enough sarcasm...
I'm just curious as to who the guy from New Liskeard is...that's my old stomping grounds and if I had a name, I could probably tell you if these horses are going to a "home" or the guy was just lying...there are a few people up there that, dare I say, are shady...got a name for me?
and now for a story...
back in, I dunno, November I'm going to say...there's a local girl around here whose parents have been involved with QH's all their life and have stood a stallion for YEARS...she went and bought a paint mare who was "supposed" to be bred but wasn't...not knowing paint bloodlines or really ANYTHING to do with paints, she was given my number to talk to me so I could give her some idea's...long story short, she called...I asked what she was breeding for...what the mare's bloodlines were (nothing spectacular, but she was probably looking for a pleasure prospect)...I suggested a couple WELL bred paint studs here in Ontario (did I mention she didn't want to take the mare too far and did not want to do AI)...1 in particular would have made a PERFECT cross for this mare...damn cheap to breed to too ($500) and has won NUMEROUS titles and championships...by the end of the converstion, she had talked herself into breeding her paint mare to her parents QH (who does NOT throw color, so another solid paint baby on the ground) because, get this...and I have to keep myself from screaming out loud "she wanted to see something cute and little out in the pasture"..............................I lost it, I laid into her (because this was of course shortly after rescuing Xena back) and yelled "it's people like you out there that are making TOO much work for the rescue people! Your foal is going to end up at an auction when you get bored of it and it will probably just go for meat seeing as it will MOST LIKELY come out solid! You're nothing but a hoarder (oh I forgot to mention, she's got everything from donkeys to geese to goats to a Llama) with too much money and not enough brains"...yes, perhaps I lost it alittle too much, but this girl is just one of those people who when she talks, you get the "WTF?" look on your face from the OUTRAGEOUS stuff she says............yup...I call them floaters
March 10, 2010 12:12PM
I'll try find out who it is, I dont know anyone from up that way, but I do know they are leaving the end of March as he told her he had a couple of horses to deliver this way !!!! I had to tred lightly with them ,when I took the dogs out of there, as they are a little suspicious of anyone that offers to help place dogs for them too. What I really loved about her conversation last night was !! she asked did we have any extra hay ?? or know of anyone that was looking to get rid of some OLD HAY, she wants about 10 rounds bales for no more than 5.00 a peice, and then said, it doesnt have to be great hay and if its a couple of years old, thats Okay, she's had no problems with that hay covered in the back stuff that everyone Yap's about !!!!! That would explain why when we picked up the 2 young female dogs, we had to treat them for Jardia, and tapeworms, before I could start house training them and place them, but the fact that they were affraid to walk on grass and kept running back to the concrete step for security ,made training them easy as they were always looking for concrete, and once they got used of being touched and played with, they turned out to be happy freindly little girl's, that trained easily, Maureen loves her little Gal , and Candice's little daughter is always sending me pics of the other female ,dressed in outrageously funny costumes, trick or treating with them, she is truely a Pampered Pouch !!! I only hope all these foal's she is producing ,have as happy an outcome !!!
March 10, 2010 03:44PM
In other words, she gets whatever income by running a puppy mill!!! Great!
Don't you wish you could put a scarlet letter on their mailbox?
March 10, 2010 05:22PM
forget the mailbox...I say brand it on their foreheads for EVERYONE to see EVERYWHERE they go!!!!
ya Crazyacres, if you can get a name for me, that'd be good...it's a start at least...and I've still got friends up there just in case this person moved there after I left and I don't know them...they can give me the DL on them...
and I dressed up my 2 corgi's for their 1st halloween...Allis went as the devil (so close to the truth you don't even know) and Moline was a pumpkin...if I have to be degraded to picking up their poop...I get to degrade them by dressing them up...lol...
I used to dress up my Cairn Terrier...I got her when I was 7 and had to put her down at the age of 18...we spent ALOT of time together...looking back now, poor, poor dog...I used to dress her up in Cabbage Patch clothes...I used to tie a barbie on her like she was Barbie's horse (Barbie's horse was too much work to move)...I used to have my stick horse, have Kelly beside me and throw a stuffed animal...when Kelly would chase it, I'd take off on my *horse* and rope her, roll her over and tie her back feet together like I was a calf roper...she'd just lay there until I untied her...oh man, the stories I could tell...look at the other thread about pregnancy...I was a TERRIBLE child!
March 10, 2010 06:49PM
They do it because they suck and other people help them to abuse thier horses by finding them free to cheap hay.
What would happen if everyone told these people to thier face that they are trash, what they are breeding is trash and to just grow up already and act responsibly.
There is no help until they stop breeding.
*sigh* if only it were so simple.
March 10, 2010 07:57PM
OMG, laughing my butt off QHCG, I will have to show Jewely how to cut cattle with my 4 lb teacup poodle JoJo, that is so funny, what a little bugger you were !!! And trust Me Noodle, she was informeed that there is no way we have any hay here of that quality , and our's is all in need of the horses here and our cattle at the other place, we cant sell Timothy, clover, braum , and alfalpha hay for 5.00 a bale, and the only other fella I know that might have extra hay, custom cut's with us and grow's the same quality of Hay.. then put a bug in everyone ear locally today, DONT DO IT AGAIN, some where left over the last couple of years without payment... she offered payment of a Puppy instead of money.. not likely..
March 10, 2010 08:02PM
I love it when these people have the big herds, and the offspring keep re-breeding with each other.I have seen first hand the result of this. I remember a yearling filly from a paint stallion being accidentally bred back to her father. They were pasture mates and assumed she was too young to breed back. The foal was tiny, tiny, tiny and had many problems.
It boggles my mind why these back yard hill billies dont get the concept of reproduction, and wait for the big money fairy to drop by and save the day.

and THIS is why I prefer animals over people...I have told people to their face that they were nothing but backyard, tire kicking, hillbilly, cidiot TRASH...it doesn't faze them...and this is funny that we're talking about this...I had a friend today email me and she bought this horse from these *breeders* awhile ago...cute little black mare, not too badly bred, broke to ride, etc, etc...well, due to some *situations* she's thinking of leasing this mare back to the breeders and asks my opinion...the breeders now have a new stud....a BEAUTIFUL (<--sarcasm is OOZING out of my mouth) grullo with NO breeding and NO show record to back him up...so, MY opinion was pretty much as follows...he's a nicely colored stud, with s**t for bloodlines and would make a better gelding...he's got NO show record...they're breeding for color...there's LOTS of *nicely* colored studs out there that have something to back them up...records, offspring, parentage...this horse has NOTHING but color...yay...ANOTHER backyard breeder...oh, did I mention that I don't like the breeders to begin with???...and not just for this reason, there are other reasons, which I won't get into right now...but it just proves my point that not ONLY should they not reproduce animals, they should've been *fixed* themselves as to not reproduce another generation of stupid people...and yes, the breeder woman DID reproduce, I used to work with her daughter...I don't mean to offend anyone here, but when I first met the daughter, I SERIOUSLY thought she was mentally challenged.............ya, no joke

I really feel for all these animals that have no choice in the matter. Makes me sick!!!
March 10, 2010 10:34PM
My current situation has found me pretty sad, and with alot of time on my hands. So with that time I have been looking into several causes that are near and dear to my heart. No matter what the cause, symptom, or species involved, the result is always the same.
Man has caused this. By our greed, consumption, and lack of knowledge and empathy. We are speciesist..we only care about us.There are "ah hum" the good humans, which I consider to be the ones like all of us, who spend out time, caring, teaching, donating and worrying how to change the minds of these back yard, breeding, un educated , dumb to the core morons who exploit and breed through sheer stupidity.I dont care if your a backyard breeder with an ant farm, or breed 30 mares a year, you had better be able to take care of what your create.
I feel the same way about parents who have child after child....I guess they figure someone will help.Theres always a safety net. It always falls on someone else.
EDUCATION is the key.It would solve sooooo many problems. Ignorance is an excuse that was been acceptable in so many un acceptable situations. Where are people going to be held accountable?? The people..not the animals that suffer. Its always the innocent that pay.Im tired of it I really am.
Sorry, but this is a super touchy subject for me!
March 12, 2010 12:14AM
Is it just me, or does anyone else notice a connection with horse hoarding and dog over breeding as well, with every horse horror story lately, there seem's to be a dog breeding operation in the mix.
March 12, 2010 04:24AM
Just watched a link through Facebook about this bat shit crazy old man in California. He ran a delapitated desert ranch where he breds dogs, cats and rabbits, all in disgusting cages.Tottally inadequate. Finally his horse colics, since they were feeding it dog kibble one day and some bad hay the next. He decide to hit it in the head with his sledgehammer, that didnt work too well, so he got his tenant (mentally ill man) to go get the chainsaw. He put the horse out of misery.
Ahhhem!..anyways this guys philosophy was to breed as many puppies as possible because he would hold a bizzaar out there in the desert to sell of his dogs, and cats and kittens.
He was getting upwards of $300-$400 pre puppy. Soooo he breeds, gets money, breeds again....
Hes old and has a bad heart and with any luck be dead soon.
The really upsetting part, is that animal control had been visiting constantly and giving him citations, which he never had any intention of paying.
These people are so sub human.Ass backwards, backyard breeders with no balls and no brains..Booooooo
March 12, 2010 09:39AM
ewww...that's disgusting...a chainsaw?...dog food and bad hay?...how isolated IS he in that desert?...enough that if someone were to drive out there and use a chainsaw on him to *put him out of his misery*, would anyone hear him scream?
March 12, 2010 06:43PM
I think he lived in Arkana, California. Dont quote me but that sounds right. It was pretty desolate. Lots of property. Not very populated.
March 12, 2010 08:53PM
A sledgehammer, A Chainsaw, please tell this thing is in jail, bad heart or not !!!
March 13, 2010 02:43PM
any word yet on who it is coming from New Liskeard?...I've been wracking my brain trying to think of who is up there with a Dude Ranch...no one comes to mind...but a couple meat buyers do
March 13, 2010 02:50PM
Yes... meant to tell you, she said she thought his said his name was Beaudry?? anyone that rings a bell to you ??
March 14, 2010 10:53AM
Beaupre maybe?...there was a Roc Beaupre who lived in Quebec just outside of New Liskeard...there were Beaudry's up there but none that were into horses when I was there...mostly city people...Roc Beaupre was not a meat dealer at least...he was a barrel racer...he actually had a stud that I took my mare to at one point to get bred...nice guy, but no dude ranch...can't see him ever getting into that sort of thing...he was a hard core can chaser...let me do some thinking here (it has been awhile since I've lived up there...10 yrs...memories fade) and if I can't think of anyone, I'll give a call to some friends up there...
Thanx for getting back to me crazyacres...my curiosity was getting the best of me...hehehehe...thank god I'm not a cat!
March 15, 2010 04:19PM
can't think of anyone...I've got a message to my friend back home on if there is someone...just gotta wait for her to get back to me...might be a few days...she just had a baby and doesn't seem to have alot of time for the comp right now...lol
April 11, 2010 09:47AM
anything more come of this crazyacres?
April 11, 2010 10:03AM
Wow - lots of reading for Sunday morning!!
Got through most of it...interested about the New Liskeard buyer also since there is a big auction coming up there (May 8? May 10?) and have been advised that most go to the local meat man
Also - read with interest that 'the baby would go to auction since the baby would not be a 'coloured' Paint (early in thread).
Just wanted to mention that having reviewed much of the slaughter videotapes (not just the published shortened versions) ... you would not believe how many bl**dy paints went through the kill box. (some real beauties too)
COLOUR is definitely NO protection (sadly)..

I actually ran into her this past week at Foodland and she let me know that all the horses were picked up and headed to NewLiskard, horses are gone and Hubby too apparently !!!! but introduced to me too new man friend, in front of her 3 under 10 yr. old children !!!! When I mentioned to her about what she'd do with the new crop of foal's up coming this spring, she willy nilly replied " Oh god ,I have no idea, maybe save some for future riding horses for the kids, they've lost so much this winter might be a nice treat !!!!! And when I asked about maybe cutting that paint Stud, she told me that a Vet once quoated her 350.00 to do it.. biting the inside of my lip I answered her " pretty cheap considering what it would cost her again to feed 9 or 10 unwanted horses born again this year " Anyone around that auction in May that see's young yearling to 2 yr old paints, most of her's come out tri-color, sort of fine boned, stunted almost, no papers and not great care, you'll know where they come from ..
April 12, 2010 07:11PM
well, if nothing's changed since I lived up there (been going to the Lisky City sale since I was a kid), then yes, most go to the local meat guy...there was a weanling/yearling there years ago when I was younger...in the pen with about 10-12 others, with a broken shoulder...I can still picture that shoulder buldging out from under the skin...even at that age, I made a rukus and DEMANDED something be done...they called the vet out and had it humanely put down...thank god...
sad to hear that they went up there...there's only a handful of people that I know that will pick those horses up at the sale, and none of them have good intentions...never did get a name for sure did you?...on the guy that picked them up?...so sad.....
April 12, 2010 08:08PM
Yeah she insist that his name is Beaudry and that he was a native guy she thought maybe in his early 50's, told her he would keep in touch and let her know how they were doing in their training !!!!
